Setting

Chaweng’s spirited shores

You’ll come out of your shell at Marasca Samui, a green-minded boutique hotel and beach club on Koh Samui’s east coast. Drop anchor at the all-natural spa or in rustic-luxe bedrooms — some have sea views, others come with private pools — before floating to the convivial courtyard for cherry ice cream. But it’s Cabanas Beach Club that makes the biggest waves, with its internationally inspired menus, centrepiece pool and sparkling sea views. This is our catch of the day.

Our favourite rooms

Making yourself at home comes easy at Marasca Samui, which pairs a homey feel with hotel frills — and boho-chic rooms reflect this harmony, with their warm-hued interiors and colour-popping ceramics. True to its name, the Comfy Sea View is a cosy space with a view-blessed balcony that surveys Chaweng Beach. Sprawl out in the Homey with Pool, where the terrace has a plunge pool that’s primed for refreshing dips and an outdoor freestanding bath tub for steamy soaks.

Poolside

The main pool is open from dawn until midnight: come for leisurely day-starting swims and return for starlit dips. Swaying palm fronds are reflected on the glassy water, and you can admire the lapis-blue tiles from the woven sofas and sunloungers that flank the sides. You’ll also find a picture-perfect pool at the shoreside beach club, which is a livelier setting for preprandial dips and sunbathing sessions. But save the skinny-dipping for one of the private pool-toting rooms…

Spa

At the restorative spa, holistic rituals have as soothing an effect as the earthy interiors, which pair limewashed walls with rose-pink details. Therapies are given a local twist: drift off with a hot shell massage, unwind with an algae body wrap, or reset with a local moringa or CBD oil therapy. There are treatments for two and mini massages for little Smiths. You’ll also find an indoor pool that suits secluded swims.

Packing tips

Green fingers: each morning there’s a ‘homegrown hour’ in the organic garden, where you can pick fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs that are then turned into cold-press juices.

Also

Next to the Smeg fridge in the central pantry, there’s a bookshelf-concealed door that leads to a secret room with help-yourself snacks, board games, a pillow menu and other frills.

Pet‐friendly

Pooches are welcome to stay in Comfy rooms; the first stays for free, a second can join you for THB 1,500 a night (THB 2,500 if they’re a bigger dog). See more pet-friendly hotels in Koh Samui.

Children

Welcome. Free baby cots for under-fives can be provided; all rooms can take an extra bed for an under-11, which is THB1,187 a night.

Sustainability efforts

Marasca Samui is a pillar of the community, partnering with local charities in volunteering projects. An organic garden supplies fresh produce for daily juices; the ceramics, artwork and sun hats in your room are made by artisans using traditional materials; and bath and spa products are organic and made from all-natural essential oils.

Top Table

One on the sea-breeze-kissed terrace or by the pool deliver frame-worthy views. Nab a private cabana for personalised service and tucked-away meals.

Dress Code

A Hunza G one-piece or pair of Vilebrequin trunks are all the modesty you need.

Hotel restaurant

Place-to-be-seen Cabanas Beach Club is the hotel’s heart, with its stripy sandside bean bags, chandelier-crowned bar and pool’s-edge tables. Seven dining stations trot the globe, showcasing local ingredients in designed-for-sharing plates. Tuck into Thai-spiced satay skewers and Italian-inspired dishes, before sampling sushi platters and Samui snapper tacos. Made-to-order sundaes and milkshakes are a decadent way to round off poolside dinners. Music tastes are well catered for, too: DJ sets are harmonised with the sound of the sea to create your beach club soundtrack, which remains up-tempo throughout the day.

Hotel bar

The bar at the breezy beach club generously supplies sea views to accompany its selection of cocktails crafted with homemade, herbal cordials and premium spirits. Alternatively, there’s a laidback lobby bar, kitted out in pastel hues and local artwork, that’s ideal for coffees and local drinks. And an ice cream cart, just outside in the courtyard, scoops the hotel’s fêted cherry-crumble ice cream each afternoon.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll find Marasca Samui on beach-blessed island Koh Samui, and the hotel uses its coastal co-ords to its advantage — starting with the sea-gazing Cabanas Beach Club, which is this resort’s lifeblood, delivering live music, all-day dining and boutique buys.

The morning ‘homegrown hour’ in the garden — where you can sample juices freshly blitzed with just-picked herbs and veg — and massage workshops are a low-tempo contrast to mixology and fitness classes (pick from yoga, tabata or Muay Thai).

Bask on Chaweng Beach’s shores or marvel at colourful underwater life with some snorkelling; the colours are just as vibrant at the Fisherman Village night market, which is an all-senses experience each weekend, and at Buddhist temples, such as the gilded Big Buddha Temple. You could also take a boat trip to nearby isles and bird-spot on tropical hiking trails.

Local restaurants

You’ll find a crowd as inviting as the international plates on Day & Night of Koh Samui’s sun-dappled terrace, where healthy brunches easily roll into lingering lunches and late-night dinners. From the Cocoon’s greenery-swathed perch, you’ll feast on panoramic beach-framed views as well as Thai favourites and poke bowls. Italian-inspired Duomo is your temple to crispy pizzas and homemade pasta.

Local cafés

Pillowy pastries, iced brews and bright-green matcha have earnt Flo its stripes as a locally loved hangout. At PlunkTone Café, superfood-rich breakfast bowls and speciality coffee are backdropped by views over Chaweng Lake.

Local bars

Suvarn Bar has many dark corners for sipping creative cocktails, sharing charcuterie boards and gazing longingly into each other’s eyes. You’ll find craft beers, house tipples and fine vintages at refined bar and bistro Chom Chada.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this beachfront boutique hotel in Koh Samui and unpacked their straw hats and woven tote bags, a full account of their sun-kissed break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Marasca Samui in Thailand…

Beach babe Marasca Samui, which sits on the quieter end of never-sleeps Chaweng Beach, is both holistic and hedonistic. At Marasca, days start wholesomely: limber up with Hatha yoga or Muay Thai, then refuel in the organic garden with a just-picked juice blend. Secure a coffee from the pantry or a board game from the secret room behind the bookshelf; for the full switched-off effect, the locally inspired spa soothes with hot shells and seaweed scrubs.

But virtuosity can only last so long — especially when Cabanas Beach Club is the hub of the hotel. Tobiko-topped sushi platters, crispy tacos and charcuterie boards fuel revellers long into the evening, as do signature tipples that are shaken up with garden-grown cordials. The club’s doughnut-dotted pool and shore-surveying setting are worthy of a photoshoot, but as the DJ sets pick up the tempo, you’ll probably have too good a time to remember to capture any digital memories...
