Setting

Near the gondola

Savoie hotel M Lodge is a bit of a looker: not just in its thoughtful design – an enticing textural tour of caramel timbers, slate, marble and fondle-me fabrics – but in its picturesque Tarentaise setting, too. Balconied rooms with picture windows shine a light on breathtaking valley views, as well as à la mode interiors dressed in designer kit. And yet the hotel’s appeal goes beyond the superficial: with a location near the lift, a restaurant you’ll want to dine in every night, multi-room options for families and a top-notch Valmont spa, M Lodge is an alpinist’s dream refuge.

Worth getting out of bed for

Made up of 22 hamlets, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville has been inhabited for centuries and a heritage walk around the village reveals much about its past from the 17th-century baroque church to its bath house and village oven. A guided snowshoe walk is ideal for discovering the terrain surrounding the village. Winter adventures from dog sledding to paragliding to night rides on a snow groomer are all on your doorstep. As well as access to skiing and snowboarding in one of France’s biggest ski areas, the resort is linked with Les Menuires just up the valley, and you’ll find an ice rink at Val Thorens, as well as tobogganing hills at La Croisette and Les Bruyères. Summer brings hikers and mountain bikers to town as well as those seeking high-adrenaline thrills such as rafting and canyoning, biathlon, high ropes and zip-lining all on offer nearby.

Local restaurants

The refined Savoyard dishes on offer at father and son René and Maxime Meilleur’s restaurant, La Bouitte, is reason in itself for many to come to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville: crozets are given a risotto twist; raclette is made airy and light, perch is served meunière on a bed of wood sorrel and an assortment of milk puddings is elevated into a love letter to lactose. At Le Toré, a wood-lined dining room warmed with caramel upholstery and brass pendant light shades serves as a backdrop for rustic fare reworked into culinary art: chef Jean-Sebastien Prijot’s plates showcase mountain ingredients such as ripened cheese, cured meats and herby sausage with tweezered precision accompanied by a finessed Franco-Italian wine list.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside M Lodge in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville

There are resorts that put you nearer to the Three Valleys ski area and mountain trails, but none as peaceful and pretty as Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, a Savoyard village that retains a traditional Alpine charm. Thankfully, newcomer M Lodge is wise to the wiles of old-school chalet architecture… without a hint of purpose-built modernity, it takes all that’s appealing about traditional timbered lodges (exposed beams, pretty gables and wooden balconies) and brings it bang-up-to-date with contemporary comforts such as a state-of-the-art spa with a sauna, pool and terrace, and a top-notch restaurant with a daily-changing menu of small plates, sushi and mountain fare. Rooms and suites (all with balconies) blend practicality with panache – ranging from family rooms with bunks to two-storey suites featuring billiards or table football. Elitis wallpaper, Eichholtz furniture, Arpin fabrics and Tom Dixon lighting bring upscale polish to modern Alpine interiors throughout. And a pole position near the lift and only a short walk from centre-ville means it’s easy to make the most of your poised-for-adventure locale.
