Style

Well-heeled holistic haven

Setting

Lemon-lined lakeside

Healing hideaway Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda puts the ‘aah’ in Lake Garda, with views of the sapphire water from every corner. The  star-of-the-show spa pampers with saltwater whirlpools, view-blessed saunas and a host of health programmes. And though we wouldn’t say no to a gua sha facial, wellness here is holistic, so what’s on the inside counts too: at the two Mediterranean restaurants, wholesome local produce and peppery olive oils are your longevity-fuelling fare (immortality not guaranteed)...

Our favourite rooms

There’s no favouritism here: each suite at Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda is bestowed with a breathtaking backdrop of the namesake lake. You’ll get your greens in a garden-gazing Prestige Junior Suite or delight in a Sky Suite’s all-things-blue views, Jacuzzi-toting balcony and private sauna. If you take your wellness very seriously, the Royal Pool & Spa Suite is like a mini resort with its own spa and treatment room, a private garden and a lake-facing whirlpool.

Poolside

If Lake Garda’s crystal waters have planted the idea of a paddle, you’re not short of spots to choose from. The infinity edge of the large outdoor pool seamlessly blends with the lake beyond, creating one soul-soothing stretch of blue framed by verdant peaks and rugged coastline. Fonte Roccolino is a heated whirlpool, tucked into the resort’s gardens and with similarly jaw-dropping views. You’ll also find an indoor-outdoor pool at the spa.

Spa

Expectations are high when the spa features in a hotel’s name, and Lefay Spa rises to the challenge. The souped-up space boasts six unique saunas (we’ve got our eye on the panoramic Finnish one), an ice pool, waterfall, hammam and three heated pools. All-natural rituals harmonise traditional Chinese medicine with cutting-edge western science, and you can prolong your return to reality in the spa’s tranquil gardens or whirlpool-dotted relaxation areas. Staff can also create bespoke wellness programmes with treatments designed to serve your chosen focus, such as sleep, stress and detoxing.

Packing tips

Work on your wellness beyond the spa and shun screens in favour of journaling, tome-like reading material and meditation.

Also

The resort’s round-the-clock gym offers a more active approach to wellness, and motivation comes in the form of stellar lake views from the fitness classes and outdoor area.

Pet‐friendly

Pooches are pampered too: they can stay in selected Prestige Junior and Exclusive Suites or the Royal Pool and Spa Suite for €50 a night; a bed, bowl and treats are provided, and they can join you in the lounge bar and La Limonaia restaurant. See more pet-friendly hotels in Lake Garda.

Children

Welcome. There are Family Suites; little Smiths aged three to 11 can attend the free kids’ club, and babysitting can be arranged with notice. However, the spa is for over-16s only and Gramen restaurant accommodates over-10s.

Sustainability efforts

It’s not just mind and body that are salved at Lefay Resort & Spa, consciences are too. This green-minded retreat offsets its carbon emissions, relies on renewable energy sources, eschews all plastic, supports global environmental projects and adopts water conservation initiatives. The staff are as local as the materials and produce used throughout, and the restaurants’ seasonal menus favour Earth-kind ingredients.

Food and Drink

Top Table

We don’t want to sound like a stuck record, but you’ll get scene-stealing views of the water from La Limonaia’s balcony and Gramen’s terrace…

Dress Code

For floating from the spa to La Limonaia, opt for loose linens and flowing fabrics to express your internal lightness; get glammed up for Gramen.

Hotel restaurant

At Lefay’s two Mediterranean restaurants, both helmed by chef Matteo Maenza, you’ll find sustainably minded menus favouring local ingredients. Laidback Italian impresses at La Limonaia, which takes culinary cues from the longstanding lemon groves that carpet the surrounding hillside. Fine-dining Gramen is similarly inspired by its Lake Garda locale, transforming fish and plant-based produce into two themed tasting menus: water and land. You’ll be as full as your camera roll after dining at either: both restaurants, in case you haven’t cottoned on to the recurring theme, have screensaver-worthy lake views.

Hotel bar

The low-lit Lounge Bar provides a sepia-toned contrast to sunshine-saturated days. Nurse nightcaps at the marble bar as a pianist tinkles away or take your spritz to the terrace for a starlit rendezvous. At the pool bar, light snacks and chilled wines accompany your cooing over the horizon-blending lake below.

Last orders

La Limonaia serves breakfast from 7.30am to 11am; lunch from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, and dinner from 7pm to 9.30pm. Dinner-only Gramen is open from 7pm to 9.30pm. The pool bar pours from 10am to 6pm; the Lounge Bar is open until 1am.

Room service

You can order from a separate menu around the clock for an additional charge.

If you’d rather put someone else in the driving seat (the resort is reached by a winding, uphill road), the hotel runs shuttles to Gargnano throughout the day.

Worth getting out of bed for

Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda’s bathed-in-nature surroundings go hand in hand with their wellness-worshipping ways. The resort sits in a 27-acre estate, characterised by gentle hills, olive groves and – you guessed it – panoramic lake views, and you’ll find hiking trails and a running circuit amid the grounds. Try Nordic walking to neighbouring villages or e-bike through the mountainous Alto Garda Bresciano Park. The resort runs shuttles to D.H. Lawrence-loved Gargnano, where you can tour the traditional limonaie (lemon groves). Take a dip in the lake at a nearby rocky beach, such as Spiaggia di Castello; staff can arrange sailing or speedboat trips, too. Bon viveurs might also enjoy a picturesque picnic, a tasting at a biodynamic winery or an outing to the sculpture-dotted André Heller Garden

Local restaurants

The winding drive to secluded Ristorante allo Scoglio is worth it: tuck into fresh pasta and seafood in its waterfront garden. Regional favourites are given a fine-dining makeover at chianti-red Ristorante La Tortuga, and its service is as special as its artfully presented plates. Head to the port-facing terrace at Aeolus Restaurant for family recipes and the catch of the day, plus a hefty cocktail menu.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this lake-surveying hotel in Lombardy and unpacked their lemon-scented soaps and local olive oil, a full account of their mind- and body-balancing break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda in Italy…

At vitality-vamping Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda, transcendental treatments will leave you feeling as though you could walk on water (figuratively speaking, although the lake’s serene shores are a short drive away if you want to test out your newfound lightness). A shuttle service to quaint Gargnano is included with your stay, but we have an inkling you’ll end up sidetracked by the all-bells-and-whistles spa, with its mountain-framed saltwater pool, Finnish sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows, and Chinese medicine-inspired rituals. Your virtue continues at the two terrace-toting Mediterranean restaurants, where chef Matteo Maenza’s considerable emphasis on plant-based and garden-fresh produce means eating the rainbow has never been easier. That said, you might find your diet heavier on one colour than others: blue, dished up in sweeping Lake Garda views and sky-blending pools...
