Setting

Zürich’s liquid lure

Lakeside La Réserve Eden au Lac Zürich has had more than a hundred years to perfect its hospitality, so you know you’re in safe hands. Zürich’s one and only five-star hotel right beside the waterfront woos with classically beautiful architecture, wonderful staff and delicious cuisine, from inventive Peruvian-Asian fusion fare to grilled-to-succulent-perfection Mediterranean dishes. Sensibly, the hotel called upon a certain Philippe Starck to cast a spell upon the interiors: a sophisticated symphony of neutral hues, splashes of blue and nautical, lake-honouring accents. Take the hint from the views yielded by the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows and duck out every now and then for liquid adventures and prime people-watching.

Our favourite rooms

Thanks to a certain chap by the name of Philippe Starck, all 40 rooms are utterly winsome. Be sure to request one with lake views (only a quarter of the hotel’s rooms come without). Pale, muted hues, nautical-inspired Jatoba wood, papyrus-like wallpaper, striking sinks and exposed brick are just a few of the noteworthy design details.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Sit out on the terrace at La Muña when weather permits; at Eden, opt for a table by the window so you can eye up the lake, or sit by the open kitchen for culinary drama.

Dress Code

Channel your inner Swiss socialite: model cashmere, cologne and Chopard gems.

Hotel restaurant

Thanks to its lofty top-floor perch and pretty outdoor terrace, La Muña restaurant comes with dazzling views of Lake Zürich and the white-cloaked peaks of the Swiss Alps. Divide your admiration between the scenery and the ambitious Peruvian-Asian fusion fare. La Muña only has space for 35 lucky bottoms, making for additional smugness. There’s more room at the hotel’s downstairs charmer, the Eden Kitchen & Bar, which is rightly proud of its custom-made grill that turns out delicious Meditteranean-inspired dishes with just the right amount of char.

Hotel bar

Stay put at the Eden Kitchen & Bar for tasty tipples. An ice-cold Swiss white wine or classic cocktail seems appropriate…

Last orders

You can eat at Eden from 6.30am until 11.30pm; La Muña is open from 11.30am until midnight.

Worth getting out of bed for

Having relaxed in the splendour of your room, explored the smoking room and cellar, enjoyed delicious meals in the restaurants and indulged in an in-room spa treatment or two, consider heading outside. A five-minute stroll along the promenade brings you to the Opera House, for example…

Hop into Zürich on Alex, the hotel’s handy houseboat, and spend a day gadding around Switzerland’s largest city. Have a massage or beauty treatment starring Swissline lotions and potions or create your own custom cocktails at the dapper hotel bar. Budding Willy Wonkas can join a chocolate-factory tour at one of Switzerland’s famous chocolateries: try the Lindt & Sprüngli Chocolateria in nearby Kilchberg, a 20-minute drive from Zürich. (If you’d rather stroll to your cacao hit, head to one of Zürich’s chocolate havens, such as Läderach on Bahnhofstrasse, Max Chocolatier on Schlüsselgasse or Confiserie Sprüngli on Paradeplatz.) See Zürich from the water by embarking on a genteel boat tour with local company Hensa. In summer, hire boats or enjoy watersports galore on the shimmering lake. For an easy hike, tick off Zürich’s ‘house mountain’, Uetliberg, which rewards explorers with beautiful views of the city, lake and Alps.

Brave the tourists (they’re there for good reason) and explore Zürich’s chocolate-box pretty city centre, especially Niederdorf and Oberdorf, where fondue restaurants vie for space with sweet shops and souvenir stalls.

Local restaurants

Sit out on the ravishing terrace at Café des Amis on Nordstrasse and enjoy a leisurely breakfast, brunch or lunch. Diners flock to Chez Fritz for its romantic, lakeside setting on Seestrasse; the innovative Meditteranean cuisine is another big reason to come here. Sticking with the terrace-and-Med theme, Portofino dishes up delicious Italian fare from a prime waterfront perch. Peckish nautical types can dock their boats at one of Portofino’s six landing stages, before heading to the restaurant. For Michelin-endorsed plates of food, visit Rico’s in the village of Küsnacht, close to Lake Zürich. The elegant restaurant is decorated with various artworks; the chef also has a creative streak, riffing on French, Italian and Asian culinary themes.

Local bars

Nab one of the artfully dishevelled Chesterfields at Raygrodski and sip your way through classic and not-so-classic cocktails; make ours a Hot Russian, please.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this historic hotel in Switzerland and unpacked their chocolates and gems, a full account of their lakeside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside La Réserve Eden au Lac Zürich in Zürich

‘Darlings, I’ve made it! I write this by the water’s edge at La Réserve Eden au Lac Zürich, with a glass of ice-cold sparkling Swiss wine to hand! Can’t stay long; just-grilled lobster calls!’ That’s one way you could begin a postcard to the folks back home when you bed down at La Réserve Eden au Lac Zürich, which brings out the inner playboy/playgirl in everyone. It’s unsurprising really, when you consider this grande dame’s pedigree: the hotel – in various guises – has been wooing and wowing discerning guests for more than a century. That explains the smooth-as-butter service and top-notch hospitality, the sense of luxurious ease and the way everything here runs without a hitch or wrinkle. There’s a holiday’s worth of reasons to stay put at boutique basecamp, but Zürich’s lakeside attractions, stellar people-watching potential and outdoor adventures mean stirring yourself somewhat, at least occasionally, is probably more than sensible.
