Hotel restaurant

Chef Maxime Bobin is at the helm of restaurant La Volière, which specialises in local delicacies and fresh seafood. Settle into a cosy corner seat in the lantern-hung restaurant or dine alfresco on the pergola-shaded terrace; start your dinner with yuzu-marinated mackerel in fennel cream before mains of oven-cooked catch-of-the-day. Don’t miss the Valrhona chocolate tart, served with a scoop of home-made salted caramel ice cream. Book in advance for Sunday brunch (€65 an adult, €23 a child), a decadent buffet spread of morning favourites, including fresh fruits, crusty breads, oysters on ice, gourmet salads, fresh seafood and baskets of freshly baked pastries – served with champagne, of course. 

Hotel bar

Settle into the plump sofas of the cosy lounge or, in summer months, ask a member of staff to point the way to the hotel’s hidden rooftop bar. Surrounded by pine trees, it’s ideally positioned for sundowners. Go dealer’s choice with the cocktail of the day, or order anything made with Citadelle French gin (we like the martini).

Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 10.30am (Sunday brunch from 11.30am). In July and August, La Volière is open for dinner every night from 7pm to 9.30pm; from September to June, it’s open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday only.

La Palmeraie is in the centre of La Baule and a short stroll from the beach.

Planes

Nantes Atlantique is 90 minutes away by car, and is served by Air France, KLM, EasyJet and a handful of other carriers; direct flights can be booked from select cities across Europe, including London, Paris, Marseille and Amsterdam.

Trains

SNCF trains from Paris Montparnasse Station pull into La Baule Escoublac station, two kilometres from the hotel.

Automobiles

There’s no onsite parking, but the adjacent off-street parking is free. There's no real need for a car in La Baule – we suspect you’ll want to spend most of your time on foot or bike, visiting the seaside cafés and exploring the coastal paths (when you’re not stationary, soaking up the sun), but a set of wheels can come in handy if you’re keen to get to know more of Brittany.

Worth getting out of bed for

La Baule beach – a nine-kilometre-long stretch of sand with views from Pornichet to Pouliguen – is a three-minute walk from La Palmeraie. Test out your sea legs on Bauloise Bay with a flotilla of watersport options, like windsurfing, kayaking, paddle-boarding and catamaran sailing. Prefer to stay dry while you take in the sea air? Borrow from the hotel’s fleet of bikes and pedal your way to along the wild coast bike path. There are also hiking and horse-riding trails to explore. The nearby harbour town of Le Croisic is France’s main centre for cockle farming: take a guided tour of Route des Coquillages (the shellfish trail) or wander through the old town, pausing at pretty, 16th-century half-timbered houses. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Guérande salt marshes by boat or spend a day wandering the trails of Parc National de Briere. For the most sweeping of sunset views, stroll down the coast and snag a spot at Baie de la bonne Vierge; bonus points for carting a bottle of wine (and a corkscrew) along with you.

Local restaurants

Brunch on the beach at Les Canetons and wiggle your toes in the sand while you slowly wake up to rich coffees and local seafood dishes. Lunch à la Française on savoury buckwheat galettes – filled with cheese, ham, followed by lemon-and-sugar crepes at Crêperie La Petite Bauloise. For dinner, there’s modern beachside restaurant Le Récif – an on-trend spot for prettily plated dishes and salty sea air; it doesn’t accept bookings, but is well worth a queue. Celebrating something? Gourmet restaurant L’Océan rises just above the rocky shoreline and has wrap-around bay windows with sunset-facing ocean views. Choose from à la carte or set menus of freshly caught fish – go for the baked-in-salt sea bass if you have the option – and shellfish, followed by rich cheese plates and light-as-air soufflés.

Step right up, via the palm-lined staircase, to boutique hotel La Palmeraie, an art-deco seaside stay on the west coast of France. Antiques – a bamboo desk here, a ceramic fish there – nod to the hotel’s history and sea-and-sand hues lend a calming air to the otherwise modern hotel. Leisurely breakfasts of freshly baked pastries and local favourites can be served on the hidden alfresco terrace – try to spot the resident ginger tabby while you sip your morning coffee – and, in summer, evenings can be whiled away on the rooftop bar.
