Ravishing Rive Gauche

JK Place Paris is the first foray outside the motherland for the haute Italian hotel group. Ever the perfectionists, they scoured the city high and low for the perfect pied à terre (searched for five whole years, in fact), before planting their Place in a former embassy on the quiet Rue de Lille, très pres to the city of light’s most classic sights. Thanks to designer Michele Bönan’s avant-garde mishmash, every space (from the ravishing reception rooms to the subterranean spa) feels sumptuous and colourful – more opulent home than grand hotel. The residential appeal, coupled with JK’s effusive Italian service, will soon make you feel like one of the in crowd.

Our favourite rooms

Thanks to designer Michele Bönan, the bedrooms mix Italian va-va-voom with a jot of je ne sais quoi. Each has its own individual design but common threads include mid-century motifs and oversized geometric rugs. We're particularly partial to the Junior Suite, with its Pinterest-worthy parquet flooring and marble-clad ensuite bathroom.

Unusually for Paris, this townhouse totes a sleek heated indoor swimming pool in the subterranean spa.

Choose from rejuvenating facials or de-stressing essential-oil massages in the boutique spa. There’s a sauna and a steam room too, for sweating out your sins.

Packing tips

Make Parisian style mavens Emmanuelle Alt or Caroline de Maigret your pinup girls. Gents: you can’t go wrong with Italian suiting.

All public areas and two Deluxe bedrooms are accessible for wheelchair users.

Pets can come to Paris, too – just let the hotel know in advance and they’ll leave bowls, beds and treats in your room. See more pet-friendly hotels in Paris.

Well-behaved children of all ages are very welcome, but it’s more of an adults-only address.

Food and Drink

Top Table

In winter, take a seat by the fireplace for a romantic tête-à-tȇte.

Dress Code

Anything but normcore – this is a place to peacock.

Hotel restaurant

You may recognise Casa Tua’s contemporary Italian sharing plates from their glamorous Miami or Aspen locations. If so, you’ll be relieved to see that the beloved homemade burrata, tagliolini with caviar and whole roasted branzino are all intact on the menu in their first outpost outside the US. The feel here is more French countryside than inner city, with quaint objets and an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work.

Hotel bar

The hotel’s see-and-be-seen downstairs lounge is the fashion set’s preferred address for conversation and cocktails (expertly mixed negronis, to be specific).

Last orders

Breakfast is 7–11am; lunch is from noon to 2:30pm and dinner is 7–10pm.

Room service

The full restaurant menu is available as room service during opening hours. There’s a reduced menu available overnight too, in case hunger strikes after dark.

JK Place Paris
82 Rue de Lille

You’ll find JK Place Paris steps from the Seine in an elegant former embassy building on the tree-lined Rue de Lille. Here, in the storied 7eme Arrondissement, you’re moments from the Musée d’Orsay and a jaunt from the Jardin des Tuileries.

For domestic flights within France, Paris’ Orly is the one, a 30-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re flying from further afield, aim for Charles de Gaulle, a 40-minute drive away. A taxi from the airport will cost about €55, or the hotel can organise car transfers from €190 each way.

Manoeuvre the city by Metro – the Assemblée Nationale stop is practically on the hotel’s doorstep.

You won’t need a car to explore Paris, where ambling aimlessly is almost the entire point. If you are wielding wheels, there’s public parking not far from the hotel at Tour Maubourg.

Worth getting out of bed for

You could spend an indulgent morning moving from the bountiful breakfast spread to the spa for languid laps in the indoor pool and youth-infusing facials. When you’re fed, bathed and dewy faced, Paris’ beauty beckons. Start with the Musee d’Orsay, home to the world’s largest collection of Impressionist masterpieces – it’s right on your doorstep, so you only need nip next door to feast your eyes on Cassatts, Caillebottes and Corots. From there, stroll across the Pont Royal to find the Louvre on your right and the Jardin des Tuileries to your left, home to the Musee de l’Orangerie, where you’ll find eight of Monet’s Water Lilies murals.

Next, canter down the Rue Cambon, one of Paris’ most legendary shopping boulevards, to the fashion phenomenon concept store Nous. Set up by former Colette collaborators, this is the place to spy on tomorrow’s trends: high-tech gadgets, sell-out street wear and wacky watches. Toast your new purchases by pulling up Papa’s favourite seat at Bar Hemingway in the Ritz Paris (order the Serendipity, made with apple juice, Calvados, champagne and fresh mint) but don’t try to match his quantities – according to legend, he once drank 51 dry martinis here.

Local restaurants

Have a well-heeled lunch at Ralph’s, an American café attached to the Ralph Lauren shop with alfresco seating in a charming courtyard. It’s worth the squeeze at Vivant, the vivacious but miniscule wine bar and restaurant not far from the Folies Bergère. By night, visit fellow Smith spot Hȏtel National des Arts & Métiers in the Haut Marais for cocktails at its hallowed Herbarium bar where the drinks are inspired by vintage perfumes.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this on-trend townhouse in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and unpacked their flea-market finds and Rue Cambon treasures, a full account of their luxury European city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside JK Place in Paris…

Once you walk through the discreet doors at JK Place Paris, you’ll see why the fash-pack flock to the brand’s tasteful townhouses in Capri, Florence and Rome: there’s a powerful urge to vogue amid the mix of mid-century metal armchairs, eclectic artwork and Fellini-esque photographs. The man responsible for the achingly elegant interiors is designer Michele Bönan, the group’s preferred partner in chic, who uses soft colours and fabulous fabrics to give the idea that you’ve wandered into the apartment of an impeccably tasteful aunt. And luckily, this aunt can cook: while the flavour in the rest of the hotel is firmly Français (down to the bijou spa and armfuls of antiques from the Marché aux Puces), the food at Casa Tua restaurant is gloriously Italian. With a negroni in hand, your best people-watching sunglasses affixed and the light slanting on those sumptuous sofas just so, it’s hard not to feel that this is exactly the Place to be.
