Setting

Montauk’s golden dunes

As you pull off the Montauk Highway, the first thing you’ll notice about Hero Beach Club is a bright yellow smiley face painted on its white clapboard exterior. And when you see the Tulum-inspired interiors, sprawling lawn, tempting pool terrace and the surf just steps away, we’re certain a smile will be painted on your face, too. This cheerful and frill-free hotel makes the perfect Hamptons home base, whether your plan is to hang ten, hike in the nearby nature reserve or do some serious lobster-roll reconnaissance. Wholesome beach fun of the bucket, spade and s’mores variety is back in town.

Dress Code

Though it’s not the sleepy fishing town it once was, Montauk isn’t nearly as glitzy as the rest of the Hamptons, so think board shorts, beanies and batik bikinis.

Venture out and explore the Hamptons’ diverse dining scene – from fresh produce stands to white-tablecloth affairs, you’ll be spoiled for choice (and practically guaranteed to rub elbows with a celebrity or two).

Address
Hero Beach Club

Montauk

United States

Hero Beach Club is in Montauk, the town at the very tip of Long Island’s south fork. The white-washed clapboard building, a former roadside motel built in the 1950s, lies right behind the waving grasses of the dunes, just a few steps from the sand.

Planes

Long-haul flights generally touch down at New York’s John F Kennedy airport, the closest international hub to the hotel. It’s about two hours away by car, though it can take (quite a lot) longer on summer weekends.

Trains

It’s just over three hours by Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from NYC’s Penn Station to Montauk. From there, it’s a five-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

If you plan on exploring the rest of the Hamptons, a car will come in handy – you’ll get the best rate if you rent one at the airport. Bus options along the Long Island Expressway include the Hampton Luxury Liner and the Hampton Jitney.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’re right on Umbrella Beach, a picturesque and popular stretch of public shore that’s safe for swimming. When you’ve built up an appetite, bagsy one of the barbecues on the hotel’s back lawn – make new friends by offering around your expertly chargrilled burgers and ’dogs. After a shady siesta in a cabana by the pool, join an alfresco yoga or Pilates class on the grass (the hotels offers them a few times a week).

If you’re geed up for adventure, just talk to the hotel staff – they can recommend and organise all manner of Montauk activities with their local partners: hiking at Montauk Point (where you can walk to the Montauk Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1792), surf lessons, horse-riding, tours and tastings at local vineyards or rounds of golf at Montauk Downs.

Local restaurants

For breakfast, Carissa’s bakery and café is an East Hampton institution known for its crowd-pleasing cakes, pies and pickled rye-bread loaves. Closer to home, the Montauk Bake Shoppe serves hangover-busting bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, but are most famous for the jam-filled croissants (careful with that white T-shirt). For lunch, motor over to the Marram hotel and its restaurant, Mostrador, to find a little slice of South America by the sand. The Uruguayan chefs create a bounteous buffet of asado-style meat, vegetable platters and dulce de leche desserts. Or, head to family-friendly Harvest on Fort Pond, where you can soak up million-dollar waterfront views while dining on family-style pasta platters (and if little Smiths get restless, you can go outside and feed the ducks). If classic American fare is calling your name, you’ll find all the red meat your heart can handle at the East Hampton Grill, a local staple thanks to its dark-wood panelling, intuitive service and comfort food.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this dune-dwelling hotel in Montauk, unpacked their Baja hoodies and surf-beaten board shorts, a full account of their Long Island beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hero Beach Club in the Hamptons…

Thought it was impossible to spend a weekend ‘out east’ and actually relax? Meet Hero Beach Club, a former roadside motel in Montauk that’s undergone a millennial-friendly makeover to the tune of millions. It’s set just behind the sand dunes on untouched Umbrella Beach… which is apt as the hotel has a definite U-rating. Here, you can give beer-swilling bros a wide berth in favour of surf lessons, hiking and horseback riding. For the less energetic, there are sofas on the sprawling lawn and day-beds by the outdoor pool designed for decompressing and forgetting city stress. It’s all in keeping with the barefoot, no-frills attitude that prevails here, from the smiley service (and the literal smiley face painted on the exterior), to the decor, which pairs whitewashed Scandi sleek with a brush of Bali boho.
