Style

The great escape

Setting

Central (Athens) Egg

Be part of the party at Gatsby Athens, which takes inspiration from the undisputed master of Jazz Age joy himself, and… Rocky Balboa. The art deco bedrooms have pastel pink headboards, diamond-tiled showers, golden wardrobes and velvet corner sofas, with Juliet balconies to sing from with the neighbours when things (inevitably) get rowdy. Once you’ve made it out of your slinky boxing-ring-ready dressing gown, the cocktails keep flowing in the restaurant, up on the roof and in the mysterious basement that only opens its doors for a few days every month. The brave can press the ‘surprise’ buttons in the bedrooms and sit back to see what’s summoned…

Food and Drink

Top Table

Head up to the rooftop terrace for some Acropolis (in the distance) admiration and a cosy cocktail by the fireplace during the cooler months.

Dress Code

Deco decadence Jay Gatsby would be proud of – or make Sylvester Stallone and Rocky Balboa your unlikely style icons.

Hotel restaurant

Sophisticated soirées are held most evenings at the Gatsby restaurant, which serves a Greek and Mediterranean menu of flapper-dress-unfriendly comfort food. The chef sets off for the local market every morning to pick up his ingredients and create his dish of the day. He wants everyone to feel like they’re visiting their best friend’s house for tailored-to-you sharing plates and the self-proclaimed best burger in town. Breakfast – pastry and bread baskets with jams and honey from local suppliers and the market, with à la carte options as well – can be served here or as room service.

Hotel bar

There are two: the green and gold Gatsby Bar, on loan from the Jazz Age, and Cloud 9 up on the roof. The former serves welcome caffeine and superfood-filled juices for self-medicating sore heads, but it’s never too early for its signature Artemis Negroni…

Last orders

Breakfast hours are from 8am to a hangover-friendly noon, after which brunch and lunch are available until dinner service starts at 6pm. The bar keeps serving its thirsty crowd until late.

Room service

Unsurprisingly for a hotel so committed to after-dark adventures, the room-service menu is available around the clock.

Address
Gatsby Athens
18, Lekka Str.
Athens
10562
Greece

This central-Athens hotel is in the shadows of the almighty Acropolis, next to Syntagma Square and the grandly named National Garden.

Planes

The city’s international airport is a (traffic-dependent) 40-minute drive from the hotel. A regular taxi will cost around €50, but if that’s not quite fabulous enough, the team can arrange slightly more stylish transportation for €120.

Trains

The closest metro station is Syntagma, a few minutes away on foot.

Automobiles

You won’t need a set of wheels to get around Athens when you’re this central, but if you have come by car, stow it away at the Automedon car park nearby.

Other

It’s a 30-minute drive to Piraeus, Athens’ main port and the gateway to Greece’s many islands.

Worth getting out of bed for

The hotel is on a side street that leads up to Syntagma Square, home to the Greek parliament and perfect for people-watching from one of its cafés. Seek out some shade at the National Garden or within the cultured walls of the Benaki Museum – or work your way through countless colourful bottles of ouzo and other Greek wines and liqueurs at the Brettos Distillery in Plaka. The Acropolis is a 10-minute walk (and a craning of your neck on the rooftop) away. Next-door neighbourhood Kolonaki is flocked to for its vibrant art, fashion and food scenes.

Local restaurants

You’ll be perfectly placed for accessing some of Athens’ most popular restaurants, several of which are safely within stumbling-home distance, including Nolan, which has a similar comfort-focused approach to food as the hotel and soothing dishes such as fried chicken and soba noodles with smoked salmon and tahini. Hipsters will love the ‘urban gastronomy’ on offer at Feedel (+30 21 0898 0066), an Argentine-style asador in Glyfada.

Local bars

An equally inventive approach to the imbibing of cocktails as the Gatsby awaits at Baba Au Rum, which has nothing to do with alcohol-soaked sponges and everything to do with masterful mixology, herbs and fruit from local farmers, and souvenir socks. Good times are also guaranteed at The Clumsies, which joins Baba Au Rum in the heady ranks of the World’s 50 Best Bars.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Greece and unpacked their boxing gloves and shiny shorts, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Gatsby Athens…

All six Rocky films (plus subsequent spin-offs) meet a sophisticated Long Island soirée hosted by Jay Gatsby: welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Gatsby Athens, where you can lounge around in your boxing-ring-ready shiny dressing gown by day and dial up the deco decadence by night. It’s right by the city’s liveliest after-dark establishments, though you won’t need to leave the hotel for some fun. There’s a shapeshifting pop-up space to catch while you can, with events (including fine-dining feasts by visiting international chefs) only held a few days a month. The main restaurant has its fair share of DJs and discos too, and even when it’s colder the rooftop has a fireplace and plenty of blankets to go round to make sure the party doesn’t have to stop. Guests are treated more like friends, and ones whose names are definitely on the list. It’s the eye of the tiger – and the thrill of every night.
