Between two bluffs in Baja

Los Cabos is known as ‘the end of the Earth’ and one look at boutique hotel Esperanza, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection – and it’s evident why. The resort sits on 17 lush acres that overlook the Sea of Cortez – it’s literally the edge of a continent. Spend your day horseback riding, whale watching or relaxing poolside, then grab dinner in Esperanza’s cliffside restaurant and watch the waves crash on the rocks below.

Our favourite rooms

Between the suites, villas, casitas and residences, there’s plenty to choose from at Esperanza. All of these stylish abodes boast sea views and authentic Mexican artwork. But if you’re a sucker for a hot tub, especially one on a terrace with an infinity edge, stick to the spa casitas and suites.

Poolside

Esperanza’s main pool, which overlooks the Sea of Cortez, is bi-level and infinity style. There’s also a separate smaller ‘serene' pool off to the side. Both pools have cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas plus an assortment of paperbacks to borrow.

Spa

Treat your feet to a margarita and your skin to a Corona. The Margarita Medley, which includes a foot and hand massage with lime-scented moisturizer, and the Mexican Beer & Lime Facial, a men’s barbershop tribute that involves steaming hot towels and a massage, are just two of the many unique treatments at Esperanza’s spa. You can even get a seaside massage in a palapa on the beach.

Packing tips

Don’t forget your spandex. The resort offers over 15 complimentary classes a week, including beach boot camp, TRX and yoga.

Also

Fiesta! Every Thursday night Esperanza hosts an authentic Mexican shindig on the oceanfront patio with foods from various regions, live music and fireworks. There’s also an outdoor marketplace with souvenirs, jewellery and other crafts.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are allowed for a fee of $175 per night, so bring Fido along for some Baja bliss. See more pet-friendly hotels in Los Cabos.

Children

Kids of all ages are welcome at Esperanza, though only one child is allowed per room and the hotel’s main pool is for adults only.

Food and Drink

Top Table

At Cocina del Mar the best place to eat is on the terrace that juts farthest out to sea. From there you can listen to the waves crash as you devour Baja fish and octopus terrine.

Dress Code

Casual and cool is the Cabo way. A stylish hat and some breezy linen will go a long way here.

Hotel restaurant

Seafood fans rejoice. There’s more than one option for fresh fish at Esperanza. Cocina del Mar, which has an Argentine chef, features fresh-from-the-sea fare that’s inspired by North, Central and South American traditions. Then there’s Pesca Ceviche Bar, where guests can gobble up made-to-order citrus-cured seafood dishes. Additionally, there’s La Terraza Americana for a casual lunch (salads, burgers, sandwiches, etc.) and La Palapa, which has a swim-up bar and offers authentic Mexican food. For casual Italian, try the pizzas and homemade bruschetta at Las Estrellas.

Hotel bar

In addition to an extensive tequila menu, the Lounge Bar serves appetizers and light meals such as Peruvian kebabs and carnita sliders. This ocean-view cantina also has a cigar menu.

Last orders

Dinner is served until 11pm.

Room service

Tasty bites can be ordered to your room, so no worries if you can’t bear to leave that gorgeous casita.

Worth getting out of bed for

Let the hotel be your one-stop shop for Cabo fun. Take a cooking class with Esperanza’s executive chef and learn to make clam ceviche. Painting lessons and tequila tastings are also offered on the property. Off site, the hotel can set you up with a sea kayaking excursion, surf lessons and a swim with whale sharks. January through March, embark on Esperanza’s whale-watching tour, which includes transportation, a guide, lunch and snacks. If you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the birth of a baby gray.

Local restaurants

Mariachi bands stroll the open-air dining room at Edith’s, a popular restaurant at Paseo del Pescador near Medano Beach. The kitchen specialises in traditional Mexican dishes, but also serves Caesar salads mixed tableside and bananas flambé that are caramelised in a ball of fire before arriving on your plate. Set on the beach with views of the Land’s End rock formations, Hacienda Cocina y Cantina has a beach bar and tables in the sand. The menu includes tostadas, grilled skirt steak and lobster enchiladas. Mexican meets Mediterranean at Bar Esquina on Avenida El Pescador. The kitchen serves fish from the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, along with mesquite-cooked meats.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Cabo San Lucas and unpacked their artisanal tequila and hand-painted pottery, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick postcard from Esperanza…

There are places you go to relax, like a spa retreat, and there are places you go for adventure – a dude ranch or a slopeside resort, for example. Then there are the escapes that manage to seamlessly marry the two. Esperanza is that kind of place. Make this beachfront resort your home base and head out to sea to reel in striped marlin or take to the Baja outback in a desert race car. Or, catch a sunrise yoga session then head to the spa for two straight hours of aromatic exfoliation, an oil-infused soak and a stress obliterating massage. Esperanza has exactly the level of activity or inactivity you’re looking for.
