Seclusion-seeking couples should opt for the Sapphire Sublime One-Bedroom Suite which has a private balcony with sea views. For families, the Sapphire Sublime Family Suite has plenty of open-plan living space and can sleep two adults, two children and an infant comfortably.

Poolside

There’s a trio of outdoor, unheated swimming pools – two are family-friendly and one’s for adults only.

Spa

The soothing Soma Spa brings the outdoors in with earthy tones and floor-to-ceiling windows. The treatments use Elemis products – there’s a range of detoxifying massages, hot stone treatments, manicures, pedicures, facials and prenatal pampering. The sparkling sea views from the gym are motivation enough to get moving, but if you need a bit more there’s also top-spec equipment, an array of fitness classes (Pilates, yoga,personal training) and an outdoor pavilion for alfresco activity. After all that exertion, treat yourself to a smoothie or fresh-pressed juice from the spa’s Freskada Fruit Bar.

Packing tips

The decor here is all soothing, neutral hues, so bring breezy linens and floaty cottons in understated shades of olive, navy, white and black for easygoing island elegance.

There are dedicated family suites for families of all sizes, but a cot for an infant can be added to all rooms on request.

Crèche

Kiepos Creche and Kids Club has lots of adventure in store for smalls – there’s a creche (for eight months and up), a kids club, and there's an Arcade Room for the older kids. The staff are expertly trained and multilingual and provide both outdoor and indoor activities like dress-up parties, theme nights, crafts, yoga and watersports.

Swimming pool

The main swimming pool is family-friendly and there’s a dedicated children’s pool, too.

Meals

All the restaurants have highchairs, children’s menus, baby-changing facilities and can heat up milk or baby food on request.

You can come salty and swimwear-clad at Topos Beach but we’d don relaxed linens or sundresses for the smart-casual feel of Agora and Frourio by night.

Hotel restaurant

There are three to choose from. Agora is the largest – it takes its name from the open city spaces that hosted markets and gatherings in ancient Greece. And with sea views, a heart-of-the-hotel location and sumptuous buffet spreads, you’ll certainly be gathering here. The menu is ever-changing, with a Mediterranean emphasis as well as themed nights that feature different international cuisines. 

For fine-dining, book ahead at Frourio – the airy indoor-outdoor restaurant has a huge olive tree right in the center and celebrates Corfu’s Venetian heritage with a menu that fuses Italian and Greek flavours. For balmy breezes by the beach, spend leisurely afternoons at Topos Beach Restaurant feasting on the freshest of locally-sourced seafood. There's also Spianada, a food market that aims to recreate the buzz of Corfu’s Old Town with food trucks and snack stands that serve up gourmet street food, mezze, treats and drinks.

Hotel bar

After dinner, make your way to the grown-up and glamorous NKaleri Lounge Bar for top-shelf spirits, craft cocktails and a nightly music program. Open-air beach bar Paralia is the place to sip sundowners as the last light fades over the Ionian sea.

At Agora, breakfast is from 7.30 to 11am, dinner is from 6.30pm to 10pm in Agora. Frourio is open from 7pm to 11pm.

Domes of Corfu is a luxury family-friendly hotel in, you guessed it, Corfu. Fronted by sandy beach on the western side of the island, it's 25 minutes from the Unesco-listed Old Town.

Planes

You can fly directly to Corfu International Airport from dozens of hubs across Europe; Domes is a 25-minute drive away. The hotel can arrange transfers – it's €55 each way for up to four passengers; €100 for up to eight.

Automobiles

You’ll want a car if you plan to explore the island outside the resort; rent one at the airport and there’s free parking on site.

Worth getting out of bed for

Spend your days at Domes of Corfu lying horizontal on the sandy beach, swimming in the sea or splashing in one of the resort’s three swimming pools. When you need to beat a retreat from the Mediterranean sun, browse the boutique stalls and street food trucks at the Core, a piazza-like open-air space with the feeling of a bustling town square – there’s always something going on here, from hands-on workshops to live music. Or, work your way through the soothing, beautifying and restorative Elemis treatments at the Soma spa. 

When it’s time to explore, wander the labyrinthine alleyways of Corfu’s Unesco-listed Old Town. The island was under Venetian rule for almost four hundred years, so you’ll see the Italian influences in the town’s fortresses, mansion houses and grand palace.  

If you’re tempted to take home some ‘green gold’ from the island’s centuries-old olive groves, ask the hotel’s concierge to book a tour and tasting at The Governor, an idyllic olive farm run by three generations of the Dafnis family. And, if the sight of all that Mediterranean good health fills you with desire to become a Greek god or goddess in your own kitchen, sign up for a cooking class at Ambelonas Corfu – you’ll be plied with food, wine and tsipouro as you learn the principles, techniques and key ingredients of Corfiot cuisine. 

To view the island’s wilder, more rugged side, ask the concierge for their recommended hiking or mountain bike routes that take in Corfu’s rugged coastline, sparkling sea views and wildflower-strewn hills. For extra adrenaline, horseback riding, diving and sailing can be arranged on request.

Local restaurants

Right on Glyfada beach you’ll find Pazuzu, an all-day beach bar and restaurant where you can move seamlessly from cosy sunbed to cocktail hour – its casual menu includes club sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pasta and salads. 

For a change of beach scenery, try Akron, a serene seafront restaurant and bar in the peaceful Agia Triada bay – the azure views are complemented by dishes such as seafood linguine, octopus fritters and quinoa salads as well as Greek wines and cocktails.

It’s said that Odysseus was shipwrecked on Corfu, his last destination before he finally made it home to Ithaca. But once you’ve clapped eyes on this mythical, sun-drenched isle, you’ll wonder why he was in such a rush to leave. In fact, we’ll wager a return journey will be the last thing on your mind once you’ve checked into Domes of Corfu, a thoughtful resort with all the hallmarks of a halcyon family holiday: sea-gazing swimming pools, soothing bedrooms, a trio of dining destinations and the kind of brilliant kids club that means you never hear a peep of protest from little Smiths as they wave goodbye.
