You’ll find Communal Hotel Plekhanovi in Tbilisi’s Chugureti district, 10 minutes from the Bridge of Peace and the cascading Kura River.
Planes
Georgia’s main Tbilisi International Airport is a 35-minute drive away, along the Kakheti Highway. Private transfers can be arranged on request for around GEL70 each way.
Trains
Tbilisi’s train station has well-connected routes around Georgia, with frequent links from the city to Zugdidi, Batumi, Kobuleti and Chakvi. The station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, but if you’d rather hop in a car, staff can arrange private transfers from GEL15 each way.
Automobiles
You won’t need a car in the capital. If you’re planning on exploring Georgia’s quieter corners and do decide to pick up a rental, there are public parking spots down the hotel’s street, although it’s a good idea to double-check with the front desk about any restrictions or charges.
Worth getting out of bed for
Communal Hotel Plekhanovi puts you on the art-driven east side of Tbilisi’s Kura River and less than 10 minutes from its Bridge of Peace. If you’re here to soak up local culture, head for Shota Rustaveli Avenue, west of the river, where you’ll find the 19th-century Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theater, Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum. While you’re wandering on this side of the water, be sure to stop by the Old Town to admire its Brutalist architecture and barter for antiques at the daily Dry Bridge Market, just off Saarbrucken Square. Shoppers can find their feet down Chovelidze Street and Leselidze Street, where designer names draw the crowds.
Once the summer season is in full swing, the trails that surround Mount Mtatsminda are worth the hike for their sweeping city views, and Lake Lisi is your unexpected, urban option for swimming and sunbathing.
Local restaurants
Quaint eatery Barbarestan is named for the Georgian princess Barbare Jorjadze who wrote a famous cookbook celebrating the region’s cuisine back in the 1800s. These days, dishes have been adapted a little (duck with chocolate sauce – don’t diss it till you’ve tried it), but the family that runs its kitchen continues to showcase the country’s finest fare. You’ll find few tourists at Mapshalia, a locally loved spot that pairs slow-cooked stews with cheese-stuffed flatbreads. If you’re looking to try Tbilisi’s famous khinkali dumplings, head to Café Daphna, to sample them in an upbeat, Brooklyn-like setting (walk-ins only).
Local cafés
For hearty brunches and fresh blends, head to neighbourhood hotspot Slink Café at the edge of picturesque Roses Park.
Local bars
Fabrika transforms from cultural centre to club come nightfall, its dance floors filling with those here for the live music and top-notch tipples.
