Setting

Buzzy Left Bank

Communal Hotel Plekhanovi is adding its own creatively cool edge to Tbilisi’s Left Bank – and once you’re through the doors, it's easy to see how. Raffish rooms are dressed in individual palettes with vintage curios. And in a vibrant district of muralled streets, indie eateries and shops, the hotel’s restaurant holds its own – drawing mezze-loving crowds with Levantine fare and a wealth of Georgian wines, and sealing its credentials as a city basecamp with pizzazz of its own.

Top Table

Ask for a table by the kitchen to watch the chefs work their magic.

Dress Code

Cool but loose, to make room for more mezze.

Hotel restaurant

You’ll find Weller – the hotel’s Levantine-inspired restaurant – in a cosy, living room-like space downstairs. Walls are filled with antique artwork and tables are centred between a warming fireplace and the open kitchen, where chefs grill marinated meats, plate flavour-packed mezze and bake rustic Georgian breads (some filled with cheese-chilli and garlic butter, others with tahini-trickling falafel) in traditional clay ovens. Even breakfasts are made up of sharing platters, and served to one big table to encourage bonhomie. Georgian classics take centre stage come evening at the hotel’s second dining spot, Craft, with makali-filled menus and pan-fried bites.

Hotel bar

Both restaurants have their fair share of vintage blends, but Craft is where you’ll find the lengthiest list (we’re talking reams-worth). Beckon over one of the in-house sommeliers if you’re struggling to make your pick, but a bottle from the nearby Kakheti region – where locals have been making wine for over 8,000 years – is a good place to start.

Last orders

Breakfast at Weller is from 8am to 11am; lunch is noon to 4pm, and dinner is 5pm to 10.30pm. Craft pours till midnight (1am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Planes

Georgia’s main Tbilisi International Airport is a 35-minute drive away, along the Kakheti Highway. Private transfers can be arranged on request for around GEL70 each way.

Trains

Tbilisi’s train station has well-connected routes around Georgia, with frequent links from the city to Zugdidi, Batumi, Kobuleti and Chakvi. The station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, but if you’d rather hop in a car, staff can arrange private transfers from GEL15 each way.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car in the capital. If you’re planning on exploring Georgia’s quieter corners and do decide to pick up a rental, there are public parking spots down the hotel’s street, although it’s a good idea to double-check with the front desk about any restrictions or charges.

Worth getting out of bed for

Communal Hotel Plekhanovi puts you on the art-driven east side of Tbilisi’s Kura River and less than 10 minutes from its Bridge of Peace. If you’re here to soak up local culture, head for Shota Rustaveli Avenue, west of the river, where you’ll find the 19th-century Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theater, Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum. While you’re wandering on this side of the water, be sure to stop by the Old Town to admire its Brutalist architecture and barter for antiques at the daily Dry Bridge Market, just off Saarbrucken Square. Shoppers can find their feet down Chovelidze Street and Leselidze Street, where designer names draw the crowds.

Once the summer season is in full swing, the trails that surround Mount Mtatsminda are worth the hike for their sweeping city views, and Lake Lisi is your unexpected, urban option for swimming and sunbathing.

Local restaurants

Quaint eatery Barbarestan is named for the Georgian princess Barbare Jorjadze who wrote a famous cookbook celebrating the region’s cuisine back in the 1800s. These days, dishes have been adapted a little (duck with chocolate sauce – don’t diss it till you’ve tried it), but the family that runs its kitchen continues to showcase the country’s finest fare. You’ll find few tourists at Mapshalia, a locally loved spot that pairs slow-cooked stews with cheese-stuffed flatbreads. If you’re looking to try Tbilisi’s famous khinkali dumplings, head to Café Daphna, to sample them in an upbeat, Brooklyn-like setting (walk-ins only).

Local cafés

For hearty brunches and fresh blends, head to neighbourhood hotspot Slink Café at the edge of picturesque Roses Park.

Local bars

Fabrika transforms from cultural centre to club come nightfall, its dance floors filling with those here for the live music and top-notch tipples.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique stay in Georgia and unpacked their ceramics and spices, a full account of their convivial city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Communal Hotel Plekhanovi in Tbilisi…

Georgia’s capital has been spurring new leases of life into its industrial spots since the early 2000s, and now, its otherwise uniform streets are ablaze with artwork (there’s even an annual festival dedicated to its murals), boutique eateries and roaming creatives. In the middle of its renaissance: Communal Hotel Plekhanovi – a 14-room retreat at the heart of the Chugureti district. The space once belonged to a local Israeli couple, and when the Communal group bagged its coveted spot, they decided to pay homage to the duo’s legacy with a Levantine-inspired restaurant, where diners now flock for moreish mezze platters and atmospheric evenings. Upstairs, each room and suite has its own mid-century-modern design, with artwork that nods to the Nineties and upcycled furnishings found at local flea markets. And outside, the city sits on your doorstep – so fuel up on (bottomless) breakfast pittas and get acquainted.
