Setting

Dapper design district

Design-focused Click Clack Hotel Bogotá is a playful party hub in Bogotá’s well-heeled El Chicó district – and it’s full of surprises. The glass-box architecture conceals a courtyard vertical garden, while inside you’ll find quirky animal-themed door handles and vintage curios. There’s art everywhere – even on the menu; the hotspot restaurant reimagines historic heavyweights as masterful dishes, so Kandinsky becomes sea bass ceviche, and Picasso an octopus croquette. If it sounds a little unhinged, it’s because it is – and never more so than at the Americana-laden rooftop bar, which serves the city’s favourite burgers with panoramic views on the side.

Hotel restaurant

Each of the dishes served up at small-plate-specialist Ciengramos weighs exactly that (one hundred grams), which is a great excuse to order lots of them. They’re inspired by artists through the ages: octopus croquetas are dubbed as ‘Picasso’, while ordering a ‘Basquiat’ will bring you slow-cooked short rib in a coffee and honey jus. Finish off with a Dalí (pineapple and coconut ice cream) or tangy Miró (roquefort cheesecake with sour grape marmalade), then head across to the bar, Boticaria, for artfully-crafted cocktails.

Hotel bar

Apache is a rooftop cocktail bar with a special talent: burgers. The menu takes cues from American comic books, and there’s a 1950s diner feel to the high bar stools and slouch-ready leather sofas. The view, though, is pure Bogotá – the city and the jungled mountains are splayed out all around. On Fridays, fixed-up locals flood in for a pop music party led by the live DJ.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 6am to 10.30am; Ciengramos restaurant is open all day, until 11pm. Apache bar is open from 11am until 2am every day, except Sunday when it is closed.

Room service

Any time the restaurant is open, you can order room service from the full menu.

Click Clack Hotel Bogotá
Cra. 11 No. 93 - 77

Colombia

Click Clack Bogotá is in the El Chicó design district, a short walk from Parque de la 93 and the nightlife hotspots in Zona-T.

Planes

You can fly into Bogotá’s El Dorado International airport from cities across the Americas and Europe. The 16km journey to the hotel takes about 20 minutes in a taxi (the hotel arranges transfers for $50,000 Colombian pesos each way). Call the Smith24 team for help booking your travel.

Automobiles

It’s best to leave the big-city driving to the locals – and metered taxis are ten a peso. If you do bring a car, there’s valet parking at the hotel ($23,000 pesos for the day; $30,000 overnight).

Worth getting out of bed for

Forget breakfast in bed – waiting in your room is Click Clack’s signature ‘bed picnic’ of hams, cheeses, fruit and bread bound up neatly in a rug. Scoff it in the comfort of your own pyjamas, or in the social-hub Parque de la 93 nearby, where locals gather for live concerts and salsa dancing; the park sometimes hosts fashion and design expos too. Curious types can follow cryptic clues in each guest room, which send you off exploring around the hotel and lead – eventually – to the rooftop bar. There, you can claim your prize – a special cocktail – and lord it up over the city below. Click Clack can arrange in-room massagespersonal shopping trips, and guided tours of Bogotá.

The on-trend district of Usaquén is the heart of the Bogotá’s forward-thinking food scene. The best place to sample it is at the independent stands of the Sunday flea market, where you’ll also find street musicians, puppet shows and stalls selling handmade jewelry. Wake up and smell the sweet, sweet Colombian coffee at a roastery workshop with Flavors of Bogotá – you’ll learn the tricks of the trade, and taste specialty beans from across the country. If Bogotá’s mountainous backdrop has got you pining for the hills, hike the Quebrada La Vieja trail, starting in Chapinero and ending with cityscape views at the top.

Bogotá’s Gold Museum (Carrera 6 # 15 - 88) is as close as you’ll get to El Dorado – it’s loaded with 55,000 pieces of pre-Columbian gold in all shapes and sizes, from mythical jaguar-frogs to the alluring Balsa Muisca raft.

Local restaurants

Light-flooded and plant-laden Cafe Bar Universal (Calle 65 # 4a - 76) is modelled on a European cafe, but with a twist of Colombian spirit; go for the locally-sourced shoulder of lamb with hummus and peppermint, or the reliably excellent catch-of-the-day. Buzzy El Chato (Calle 65 # 3b - 76) deals in farm-to-fork seasonal fare, including juicy barbecued lamb ribs and chicken hearts with earthy local potatoes – best enjoyed with a gulupa cocktail on the side. Gaira Café (Carrera 13 # 96 - 11) is owned by Colombian singer superstar Carlos Vives, which means you can count on live music and good times alongside your egg arepas and meat-stuffed carimañola fritters. Every day is different at Villanos En Bermudas (Calle 56 # 5 - 21), but whatever’s on seven-course tasting menu is sure to be spectacular; Mexican chef Sergio Meza learned his trade at Copenhagen’s Noma, no less.

Local bars

Gaspar (Carrera 13 # 93A - 45) is a French bistro by trade, but it’s worth the trip for cocktails on the roof terrace alone (there’s a healthy wine list too, bien sur).

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this high-design hotel in Colombia and unpacked their artisan cocoa and coffee beans, a full account of their urban break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Click Clack Hotel in Bogotá…

Don’t expect to have Click Clack to yourself. Bogotanos know how to party, and this is one of their favourite places to do it. They come for the sumptuous small plates at Ciengramos and cocktails at Boticaria, then take the Space-Invaders–themed elevator up to the rooftop bar for disco dancing (and late-night burgers). Lucky you, though, if you get to stay – you can flop into bed in your design-led nest, then wake in the morning for fresh-fried arepas and mugs of rich local coffee. You might be inclined to settle in the courtyard gazing up at the vertical gardens, but sooner or later Click Clack will implore you to come and play again. You’ll find cryptic clues leading you on a wild cocktail chase around the hotel, perhaps, or just the promise of a new DJ arriving upstairs, and a new night about to begin…
