Setting

Trot from Trapezaki Beach

We’ve read in the stars that a unique offering will come to the south coast of Kefalonia – a hotel where each suite has its own pool, the beach is a mere stumble away and the views rapturously twin forest and sea. In Celestial Hotel Kefalonia, the prophecy is coming true (this April, when it opens). There’s nothing quite like this stay along this stretch of shoreline, still wild enough for there to be untouched forest all around, and you can glimpse Mount Ainos from its tiers that cascade down a hillside. Only over-15s can stay, so serenity and romance is assured, and of course, you’re all set for a spot of stargazing.

Hotel closed

Celestial All Suites Kefalonia opens from April to October.

At the hotel

Spa and nail lounge, gym, yoga mats to borrow, gardens, plug adaptors to borrow, concierge, charged laundry and ironing service, free WiFi. In rooms: private plunge pool, smart TV, Nespresso machine, tea-making kit, bathrobes and slippers, minibar, air-conditioning, and Olivia bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Suites all bear a cool, collected mod-Grecian look, with white walls and polished woods, dabbling in different textiles and gentle colour pops. But, it’s what’s outside that counts – namely, a private terrace with a pair of sunloungers and your own plunge pool. All you need to do is decide if you want to look at the forest sea, or both, and then wallow away.

Poolside

Each suite here has its own little pool to play in, but – what’s that? – you want more pool? Well, Celestial All Suites Kefalonia will give it to you. The centrepiece of a communal pool (open 10am to 7pm) is a catwalk of blue with veiled four-poster day-beds and covered loungers dunning along the sides. And, if you want a nighttime show during the day, where a section of green roof stretches out over it, constellations of lights dot the ceiling – magic. Bar service is available and towels are provided.

Spa

The spa’s shaping up to be in good health with treatments that will be inspired by nature and the sea; two treatment rooms, each with their own shower and changing room (big enough for couples, too); a sauna; and nail salon. Yoga lessons will be held alfresco on the manicured lawn and movers and shapers will have a luxurious gym to work out in too, with refreshments provided.

Packing tips

Swimming gear is a no-brainer – while there’s a barrier between each terrace, your pool isn’t quite private enough for skinny-dipping we’re afraid.

Children

Couples, thank your lucky stars – this spot is for over-15s only.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Sit at the alfresco tables by the pool and you’re more likely to see the island’s celestial show. We also like the row of bar stools lined up by the pool, which puts an aquatic slant on people-watching.

Dress Code

Sparkle for Florencia.

Hotel restaurant

Classically clean and white, with the odd chandelier for a glamorous touch to live up to its Italianate name, Florencia Restaurant is the hotel’s fine evening diner. The menu is still on the hook, but expect it to be as fresh as the fish and seafood on it, alongside elegant Mediterranean fare. Viola, meanwhile, is a more casual dining spot next to the pool serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. And snacks can be ordered to your day-bed from the Pool Bar.

Hotel bar

Florencia and Viola will both serve drinks, but you can also enjoy cocktails, wines and beers while sunning yourself in a veiled day-bed – just order from the Pool Bar.

Last orders

Dinner runs from 8pm to midnight. Drinks at the Pool Bar run till midnight.

Room service

Dine in-room from midday to midnight.

Address
Celestial All Suites Kefalonia
Trapezaki Beach
Kefalonia
28100
Greece

Celestial All Suites Kefalonia sits on a forested hillside on the Greek island’s southern coast in a quiet spot close to Trapezaki Beach and a 20-minute drive from the main town and port Argostoli.

Planes

Kefalonia’s Anna Pollatou International Airport is just a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Transfers can be arranged on request from €45 one-way.

Automobiles

While we can see honeymooners wanting to hole up in their rooms here, and the beach is within walking distance, having a car will really open up the island for you (just take care on the twisty-turny roads). You can acquire a set of wheels at the airport and the hotel’s free-to-use parking lot is close by.

Other

You can catch a ferry from Patras in the northern Peloponnese to the port in Sami, around a 40-minute drive away.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you’re the star of the show at Celestial All Suites then you have a truly spectacular set for the story of your stay to play out on. Forested hills rise and fall all around and leafy golden rock formations swoop down into the sea, which is indeed that promising shade of holiday blue. Suites at the hotel have a view of forest, sea or both, so your private pool is guaranteed to have an applaudable view. You could stay in it until your fingers go pruney, or you could trot down to parasol-dotted Trapezaki Beach, less than a 10-minute walk away. And you can hop along the shore east to Kanali Beach or west to Agios Thomas Beach (and so on…) – they’re all lovely in their own way but we do like the latter for its dramatic cliffs. It’s possible to rent out boats, or head to the west coast where there are more watersports opportunities. Alternatively, go inland for hikes to historic villages like Mousata (about a 30-minute walk away), the ruins at Old Valsamata, or the Sacred Monastery of Agios Gerasimos of Kefalonia (both about a two-hour walk); those with plenty of puff can tackle climbing Mount Ainos. And, drive into Argostoli to wander its harbour and visit its lighthouse and turquoise sinkholes. But really, no song and dance is needed here, just a swimming costume.

Local restaurants

The hotel has two restaurants whose menus will keep you occupied, but for days out on Trapezaki Beach, you might want to try Denis, a right-by-the-coast eatery with a sand-dusted terrace, very fresh seafood and all the Greek favourites: souvlaki, kokkinisto stew, skordalia and more.

Local cafés

A cute spot for sweet brunches, Boho Crêpes also serves waffles, lavishly topped yoghurts and milkshakes.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this heaven-is-a-place-on-Earth hotel on Kefalonia’s south coast and towelled themselves dry, a full account of their splashing about break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Celestial All Suites Kefalonia in the Ionian…

Heaven comes to those who wait… But don’t worry, you don’t have to shuffle off this mortal coil or anything, you just need to go to the Ionian and check in to Celestial All Suites Kefalonia, in April, when it opens. We can’t promise harps and wings, but we can promise you’ll have a pool all to yourself, a beach very much in reach, spa spoiling and a Mediterranean restaurant serving fish so fresh they’re almost running an aquarium. In lieu of fluffy clouds, recline on a veiled four-poster day-bed – someone will flutter by to take your drink order; and a long list of Grecian wines and talented cocktail-smiths will certainly make you feel floaty. So, head to this earthly not-so-plain spot and you’ll finally understand what Belinda Carlisle was warbling on about.
