Worth getting out of bed for

Having your own Smeg-outfitted kitchen means that you can pretend to be a local, shopping Barcelona’s top-notch market scene. Head for the legendary Mercat de la Boquería to build your own cheese and charcuterie platter from the merchants’ incomparable selection of local cheeses, cured hams, fresh veg and wine for a picnic.
Barcelona is a playground of the seemingly undulating walls of famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, a Catalan modernist. Explore the Unesco-recognised Parc Güell outdoor complex, and La Sagrada Familia, the towering church that has been under construction since 1892. Near the hotel, La Pedrera is a massive residential building that looks to be mid-wave. Book a tour at sunset for rooftop views of the city.
There’s plenty of great art in town, including Fundació Joan Miró, holding the artist's Cubist and Fauvist paintings and sculptures in a building that's nearly as impressive as the works it holds. Museu Picasso holds more than 4,000 pieces by the incomparable Spaniard, including some of his most striking pieces from the haunting Blue Period.

Local restaurants

Barcelona is a foodie’s paradise, with countless cafes and tapas bars tempting passers-by with ham, garlicky shrimp, tomato-topped toasts and paella. For a meal with a view, book a table at Xiringuito Escribà, a beachfront restaurant serving some of the best meat and seafood paella in the city. Off La Rambla, Los Caracoles in the Gothic District has served classic Catalan food since 1835 in a sprawling space decorated with old photos and fragrant with sizzling garlic. Don't miss the namesake snails and the seafood-studded bullabesa soup. Just outside Ciutadella Park, the cheery Picnic serves a robust brunch, including maple syrup-topped pancakes, fried green tomatoes and shrimp-topped huevos rancheros. For treat you can eat in the park, grab puffy cinnamon rolls from social media-beloved Demasié, which has mastered the gooey, buttery breakfast treat.

Local bars

For classic cocktails in a space that would impress Gaudi himself, head for Boca Chica, around the corner from the hotel. The retro-glam two-story space above the restaurant Boca Grande serves globally inspired creative cocktails made with house bitters and syrups. Iconic wine shop Vila Viniteca has thousands of bottles of Spanish wine to bring home, and a small cafe space for those keen to sip on-site.

Ever dreamed of living in Barcelona? Casagrand makes your stylish Spanish fantasies real, with its kitted-out apartment-style suites in the heart of the city.

Near chic Passeig de Gràcia, the hotel occupies a grand, historic building designed by renowned local architect Enric Sagnier, a contemporary of Gaudí’s. The building includes corner columns, intricate carvings and an ornate rooftop dome that houses the hotel’s sauna, beside the lap pool. Head up to check it out and take in views of the neighbourhood, including Sagnier's neo-Gothic church on the summit of the Mount Tibidabo.

The suites – mostly four- and five-bedroom apartments – are each styled like a private home, with well-stocked bookshelves, stylishly homey furniture and unique architectural touches, including original ceiling moulding, brick walls, oversized doors and high ceilings. Head to the market to stock up the full kitchen and prepare a Spanish feast using the Smeg appliances for the ultimate home-made meal; perhaps invite the neighbours round? Make yourself at home.
