The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree at former family home Casa Newton (and not just because they were related to Sir Isaac): traditional features of this crimson-hued listed building have been retained, but deftly remixed with bespoke furnishings and Seventies-inspired interiors. Our favourite rooms

Each rustic yet raffish room at Casa Newton is named after the former owners’ children, so picking a favourite feels like we’re committing a parental faux pas… So, we’ll be diplomatic: we’re fans of Gervasio for its stone-archway-framed bedroom; Sofia has soul-stirring views of the chapel and olive groves; Elisabetta’s countryside-facing bath tub calls for scenic soaks, and standalone suites Aroldo and Anna have private gardens with greenery-blessed terraces.

Poolside

Seventies-style design comes into play at the Tuscan-tiled pool, where scalloped blush-pink parasols dot the poolside patio like piped meringues. It’s shrouded by pines and leafy bushes, and from your raffia sunlounger you can survey the undulating scenery of the verdant Val d’Orcia. And on days that the sun is shy, you’ll find that the water is warm, and a shallow end ensures little Smiths can take a dip too.

Packing tips

If you’re artistically inclined, a small sketchbook and some watercolours wouldn’t go amiss to capture the hills basking in the glow of golden hour (a trusty camera works wonders, too). The suites are screen-free so opt for analogue fun come evening.

Pet‐friendly

This boutique has a farm-to-table restaurant, which sources its ingredients from the kitchen garden and local suppliers. Single-use plastics are eschewed in the restaurant and rooms; you’ll also find refillable, organic bath products in your bathroom.

Hotel restaurant

Il Cervo is Tuscan with a twist: the farmhouse-style setting is enlivened with bold patterns, vintage furnishings and brightly hued tiles, and Roman chef Sara Scaramella gives regional classics a modern makeover. The focus on garden-fresh ingredients means the menu changes frequently, in line with the seasons, and you can bet that some of the Italian-inspired dishes come with a healthy dousing of Fabbrica Pienza olive oil.

Hotel bar

As you follow the rainbow furnishings of the main villa, you’ll eventually reach the pot of gold: the gilded Il Bar di Casa Newton. Ornate metallic wallpaper, embroidered lampshades and emerald-green velvet stools adorn the dapper space. Nurse a Newton (Grappa, Pienza pecorino, sage and plum) or Juda (homemade chilli vodka, fresh strawberries and lime) in one of its warmly lit corners, or sip your tipple in an alfresco spot of your choosing.

Last orders

At Il Cervo, breakfast is served from 8am to 10.30am; lunch is noon to 2pm, and dinner is 7pm to 9pm. The bar pours from 5.30pm to 11pm.

Planes

Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport is a 90-minute drive from the hotel; Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport and Pisa International Airport are two and a half hours away by road. Staff can arrange airport transfers on request.

Automobiles

Your own set of wheels will come in handy for reaching the hotel, plus Tuscan towns and Umbrian sights are all within driving distance. There’s a secure car park and two electric-vehicle charging stations at Casa Newton.

Worth getting out of bed for

Casa Newton’s sprawling estate is your verdant playground: there are walking trails that wind off into the surrounding countryside; borrow an e-bike to whizz around the Tuscan terrain, or stay match-fit with a game of tennis, croquet or bocce. The hotel’s winery, Fabbrica Pienza, hosts daily wine and olive oil tastings, which are accompanied by a tour of the impressive space. Staff can arrange cooking classes a casa, using just-picked produce from the garden. Beyond the estate, island-dotted Lago Tresimeno, honey-hued Arezzo and cosmopolitan Perugia beckon.

Local restaurants

Fondo Ristorante has community at its heart: local produce from farmers and growers is paired with fresh ingredients from the restaurant’s kitchen garden and orchard – all ideally sampled around the communal table. The virtuous theme continues at Podere Il Casale, where organic wine and food impresses just as much as the backdrop of Tuscan hills and farmland. The panoramic views from Idyllium are just as picture-worthy, as are their generous plates of refined, regional fare.

Local cafés

At Caffe’ GM, you can tour their roastery, where beans are prepared using traditional techniques, and sample their rich blends. Head to Lalma Cafe & Tearoom for a frothy cappuccino alongside pancetta- and pecorino-topped scrambled eggs. 

Local bars

You’ll find La Vineria di Montepulciano tucked down a sweet sidestreet; this intimate wine bar pairs charcuterie boards and small plates with locally made vintages. Satisfy your thirst for Sangiovese with a wine tasting at biodynamic farm and vineyard Azienda Agricola Casagori.

Listed residence Casa Newton is a berry-red beacon on the Tuscan horizon – a countryside-cushioned piece of fruit that’s ripe for picking. Its carmine exterior matches the burgundy blends bottled at the estate’s winery, Fabbrica Pienza, where tours (literally) walk you through the organic wine-making process. Hills garlanded with vines are your Tuscan-to-a-tee setting for sampling Sangiovese blends, and the storied main villa is within stumbling distance for post-tasting respite – either by the pink-parasol-studded pool or in your Val d'Orcia-surveying suite.
