On laidback Mexican hotspot Isla Holbox, Casa Muuch is an adults-only boutique hotel with just six rooms, which have a subtle bohemian look, some with their own plunge pool and sun-trap roof terrace. But, it’s the private-residence feel and beachside positioning that makes it extra special – the water is right there – making it a place where you can fully adopt the OOO mindset. There’s an outdoor unheated pool on the terrace open to guests between 8am and 10pm daily. But spring for one of the top-tier ocean-view rooms to enjoy your own private plunge-pool, ideally placed on the hotel’s sun-kissed rooftop.

Packing tips

Forget about your shoes (well, maybe it’s wise to pack one pair), with the beach in close proximity you’ll likely be barefoot for much of your stay. Loose linens are a chic, no-fuss style choice and mosquito-repellent is essential.

Hotel restaurant

There isn’t a restaurant, but guests can order breakfast from the casa’s private chef Joza, between 8am and noon. Feast on eggs, pancakes, a fresh-fruit plate, French toast…requests can be taken. For an extra charge, they can cook a special meal, and if you've booked the whole house then they can fire up the barbecue.

There’s no bar, but the concierge may be able to rustle you up an ice-cold Mexican beer and a margarita on request.

Planes

The nearest airport is Cancún International, about a two-hour drive from the ferry port at Chiquilá.

Automobiles

The island is car-free, so it’s bicycles and golf carts at the ready.

Other

You could charter a private plane to Isla Holbox’s teeny airport, but it’s easier – and more environmentally friendly – to take the ferry from Chiquilá to Holbox. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Worth getting out of bed for

Make a lazy start to days on the island. Wake naturally, lounge around for a bit, then ease into your morning with some yoga or meditation accompanied by the sounds of the Gulf of Mexico's gentle waves. Once you’re limber and mentally focussed, you’re ready to explore. In Holbox much activity centres around the ocean, so wind-surfing, deep-sea fishing, and kayaking could all be on your holiday agenda. Nature lovers should pay a visit to Yum Balam Reserve, rich in native flora and fauna, while aquatic adventurers will enjoy Cenote Yalahau (30 minutes by boat from Holbox). Post-adventuring, do factor in a nap in a hammock at some point and a pit-stop at a beach shack for grilled octopus and/or mango on a stick.

Local restaurants

Time it right and you’ll segway from sunlounger to dinner table at Mandarina Restaurant and Beach Club just as the sun starts to dip. Scorching skies are matched by flame-grilled dishes, say a whole seabass or roast chicken. Post-dinner, enjoy a nightcap by its glowing campfire. Another tempting indoor-outdoor option is Luuma, which is known for its exotic tapas (say, pancetta with caramelised leeks, balsamic vinegar and corn crumble in a demi-glace; or soya tacos el pastor) and live music. Meanwhile, gourmands will be smitten with Ser Esencia Restaurant, where a menu of ‘Yucatán new cuisine’ conceived by Roberto Solís – the ceviche is particularly celebrated.

Local cafés

Stop by compact Tierra Mia Coffee for a freshly blended berry smoothie or a cup of Joe come morning. At Mr Happy, afternoon delights (read: waffles) prompt smiles.

Local bars

Keep it casual with a corona or up the ante with shots of mezcal and a round of mojitos if the night warrants it. Maruva Beach Club is a good option for daytime libations, while bar-cum-restaurant Salma promises dinner and dancing (and late opening hours).

Laidback Isla Holbox rests on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Horizontally minded, this is a place for idling and relaxation, where you’ll be lulled by sea breezes and a backdrop of cyan waters and swaying palms. Here, the six-key, adults-only boutique hotel Casa Muuch has a private-residence feel, offering a range of rooms, some of which have their own plunge-pool and rooftop terrace. For larger groups, there’s also the option of an exclusive buy-out of the property. While there’s no official restaurant, the hotel’s on-site private chef can whip up your breakfast – eggs any-way, tropical-fruit plates and more – and there’s a barbecue to fire up on the communal terrace. The petite property has a crochet-sandalled foot firmly placed in the island’s bohemian style, but with a minimalist bent: wicker and wood pieces, plus local handicrafts, stand out against neutral tones, while stonework adds character naturally. Common areas are limited but comfortable; take-five in the lounge’s hanging-egg chair or head out to the terrace for alfresco meals and a swim in the shared pool. During the day, you can cycle or kayak about, or stroll along the beach, which is just inches from the hotel, pausing for a refreshing coconut when the sun starts to beat down.
