Setting

Further-ventura

Forged from the bones of a house once owned by a prominent Fuerteventuran family, adults-only Casa Montelongo has been transformed, with real heart, into a tranquil two-suite stay that’s simple and seductive in equal measure – its design rightly vaunted in the pages of Wallpaper*, Architectural Digest, and Vogue. The all-white interiors are calming and clean-lined, with pops of colour coming from statement sofas, curated objets d’art, and the private courtyard pool. Oh, and just wait until you see the baths…

Need to know

More details

Rates include breakfast.

Also

Although the property is all on one level there are some awkward steps and kerbs as you enter that those with mobility issues could find tricky.

At the hotel

Fully equipped kitchenette, Nespresso coffee machine, smart TV, Aesop bath products and free WiFi throughout. Laundry service is available for a fee on request.

Our favourite rooms

There are only two — the Old Theatre and the Old House — and each is similarly L-shaped, whitewashed and extraordinarily chic. Ancient objets line the shelves, statement sofas give a burst of colour, and the big beautiful bath tubs fashioned from stone and fused to the floor are two of the most stylish we’ve seen — your choice comes down to whether you want the round one or the oblong one.

Poolside

The saltwater pool (for use between 11am and 7pm) is a stylish slip of a thing in the peaceful cactus-dotted courtyard between the two suites. There are comfortable day-beds either side and hung strikingly above it is a shadow-casting iron sculpture by Tenerife artist Óscar Latuag which nods to the shapes used in the island’s traditional production of dyes.

Packing tips

If you can track down a copy of De Fuerteventura a París by Miguel de Unamuno (and you can read Spanish) you’ll get an understanding of what made the respected writer-philosopher — and, by extension, most others — so fond of the native Majoreros (Fuerteventurans).

Also

All guests have a concierge at their disposal via WhatsApp for the duration of their stay. They can supply recommendations, arrange taxis, secure restaurant reservations, book a massage, and generally ensure you don’t go wanting.

Children

Leave the crayon-wielding kids behind, Casa Montelongo is for over-18s only.

Sustainability efforts

The building was restored with the utmost sensitivity using traditional methods and simple natural materials like stone, clay and wood. It now runs solely on solar power, reuses rainwater for irrigation, and uses efficient LED lights on timers to illuminate the courtyard. Breakfast hampers use only locally sourced produce and all the soft furnishings are commissioned from island artisans who use strictly natural fibres.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Honestly? The bath.

Dress Code

Go big, bold and bright to stand out — Spain’s own Loewe seems a fitting label of choice.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no restaurant but you can cook to your heart’s content in the well-equipped kitchen and every morning, at the respectable time of 10am or 11am, a bulging breakfast hamper will be brought to your door packed with pastries, juice, fruit and freshly made pan con tomate

Hotel bar

Fill the fridge with the tipples of your choice and make cocktail hour a DIY affair (they’re partial to a honey rum on these isles). There’s a small corner shop a few doors down for those last-minute restocks.

Address
Casa Montelongo
Avenida Tababaire 27 La Oliva
Las Palmas
35640
Canary Islands

Casa Montelongo is set back from the main street in the quiet village of La Oliva in the northern tip of Fuerteventura.

Planes

The simply named Fuerteventura Airport is the only one on the island, just south of the capital on the eastern coast. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

Automobiles

A transfer can be arranged and it’s just about possible to rely on taxis and buses to get you around, but it’s much more practical to hire a car at the airport and do things on your own terms if you really want to explore the island. There is free parking at the front of the hotel.

Other

Ferry crossings between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote take less than an hour and typically cost less than €40. They run up to 27 times a day between 4am and 8pm. There are also five to eight crossings daily to Gran Canaria, each taking just over three hours. From there you can transfer to reach Tenerife if you want to tick off all of Las Canarias by boat.

Worth getting out of bed for

First off, it’s worth getting out of bed just to spend more time in the bath. And taking breakfast by the pool is rather pleasant. But there’s plenty to entice beyond the front door too. La Oliva’s church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, is its most notable feature. Built in 1708, its tower once served as a lookout for pirate attacks. Every Tuesday and Friday mornings, the village also plays host to an artisanal market, the Mercado de las tradiciones, where you can browse fresh produce and local crafts.

Head north and you’ll find two charming fishing towns within a 15-minute drive – El Cotillo on the west coast, Corralejo on the east. Both are flanked by idyllic, lesser-visited beaches, particularly La Concha, just along from El Cotillo, and the nine-kilometre sweep of ‘grandes playas’ bordered by the Corralejo Dunes. From Corralejo you can also take the 20-minute boat ride to Isla de Lobos, a designated national park fringed with white-sand beaches, tranquil turquoise waters, and crystal clear natural pools. Inland, just north of Lajares, you can get close to one of the island’s volcanoes at Calderón Hondo which has walking trails leading up to a lookout point on the crater rim. And you can continue to indulge your inner geologist by exploring the caves of Ajuy in the south west, stopping for refreshments in the old fishing village.

Local restaurants

Your Casa Montelongo concierge will provide a list of all the best spots to seek in the northern half of the island so you can plot a tried and tested tasting tour. One of our favourites was Mahoh, just a 20-minute walk up the road in Villaverde. It’s a well-loved restaurant (with rooms) fashioned in the classic rural architectural style — lots of rock, lots of wood, and garden terraces lined with cacti — where the grill takes centre stage and simple things are done well (or rare if you're talking steak). Another standout, not least for its dramatic ocean view, is Restaurante La Vaca Azul, a vibrant seafood-centric spot with bold blue detailing sat above the harbour wall in El Cotillo.

Local bars

Kiosko La Oliva, next to the ‘La Oliva’ sign, is as low key as it gets — a kind of pavement chiringuito — but it’s a real gathering spot for locals and the sunset looks pretty great over a beer and some snacks. If you’re up in El Cotillo come golden hour, Mirador Sunset, as its name suggests, is a prime sundowner spot.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Casa Montelongo in Fuerteventura…

We don’t have favourites in our collection, but we do get a particular thrill from unearthing under-the-radar, independently owned, small-but-mighty stays. Casa Montelongo is the quintessential example: hidden behind an unremarkable door on a quiet village street in the sandy flats of northern Fuerteventura is a piece of true designer brilliance. Shorn of the trappings of a restaurant, a bar, a lobby and the like, the focus here is on just two sizeable right-angle suites and all credit to architect Néstor Pérez Batista for making something so simple elicit such a thrill. Though the parts are perfect – minimal statement furniture, all-white surfaces, well proportioned kitchens, high-thread- count bed linens – the sum is somewhat greater, particularly on account of the courtyard pool and the centrepiece bespoke bath tubs, given almost ceremonial presence in each suite. Positionally, this boutique retreat is well placed for exploring beaches, fishing towns and volcanic expanses of the island’s quieter north, but you’ll feel like a local so long as this is your address. Just don’t be surprised if a location scout knocks on the door asking to borrow it for some high-fashion photoshoots.
