A bijou bolthole on the cobblestoned, colonial streets of San Miguel de Allende, Casa Delphine is a short stroll from the famous Parroquia and its pretty pink spires. The cosy casa in possibly Mexico’s most charming city has just a handful of suites, each created by the jewellery-designer owner who’s turned out to be a natural at interiors, too. There’s no restaurant, but a bountiful breakfast of local produce is laid out for guests each morning – and the street-food stalls, rooftop restaurants and marvellous mezcalerías in town are all within walking distance.

There are just a handful to choose from and each has its charms, most notably the Roof Garden Suite, which has a garden and a roof terrace with a town-facing Jacuzzi. We also love the ground-floor Master Suite 3 for its front porch, fireplace and French doors.

Packing tips

Bring cobblestone-friendly footwear for taking to the San Miguel streets in gainly style, but you can ditch the guidebooks – the owner has imparted all her favourite things to see and do into a very handy booklet.

There’s no restaurant at the hotel. Breakfast is served on a convivial communal table where you can meet other guests over freshly squeezed juice, local coffee and just-baked pastries. The casa does occasionally hold pop-up dinners cooked by guest chefs, as well.

You’ll find Casa Delphine in the cobbled, colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, central Mexico.

Planes

Guanajuato’s Del Bajío airport is the most convenient; the 100-kilometre journey should take an hour and a half by car. It’s a similar distance to Querétaro’s airport. Hotel transfers to and from either cost $150 each way.

Automobiles

The casa is three and a half hours north by car from Mexico City. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel church is a 10-minute walk from the property, but if you’re planning on venturing further afield, it’s worth hiring your own car. There’s free valet parking when you arrive.

Worth getting out of bed for

Keep an ear to the ground for hotel happenings, which include mezcal tastings, tarot readings and art exhibitions. Or settle into a spot in the courtyard or lounge with a book or an intention to nap. The region’s best hikes are to be found in the Charco del Ingenio botanical gardens. For a tour of the Cañada de la Virgen pyramid accompanied by possibly the world’s most invigoratingly named archaeologist, call upon the services of Albert Coffee. If you want to check out a nearby vineyard, head to La Santísima Trinidad, about a half-hour drive from town. Valle de los Sanderos is a self-styled ‘urban oasis’, where you can take the (thermal) waters, enjoy the gardens and ride horses. The town’s most famous sight is the pastel-pink, wedding-cake spires of the neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

Local restaurants

Get caffeinated at Garambullo in the Zona Centro, which also does a fine line in smoothies. Book a table out by the colonial columns on the courtyard of The Restaurant for a meal of corn and shrimp chowder, avocado and papaya salad, and porcini and parmesan risotto. It doesn’t get fresher than the Mexican menu at Jacinto 1930, which uses almost exclusively local ingredients. The rooftop Atrio on Calle Cuna de Allende is the place for fine-dining fare with a view out to the pointy towers of the Parroquia.

Local bars

Buen Viaje in central San Miguel is a mezcalería that only recently added meat to its menu; vegans will be pleased to hear that plant-based tacos and tostadas are still being served.

San Miguel de Allende is where in-the-know Americans love to keep a holiday home. The cobblestoned colonial city in Guanajuato is a world away from the spring-break crowds of Cancun; there are definitely no sombrero-selling stalls, although mariachi bands are allowed. The street food is superb and the locals super stylish – and at Casa Delphine, you’ll feel like one of them: the chic boutique bolthole has only a handful of rooms. Each one as dreamily decorated as the next: the owner may be more used to designing jewellery for her day job, but she’s equally skilled at arranging colourful cushions and printed rugs. There’s no restaurant, but you can be sure of an artisanal coffee that would make any East London type proud and avo on toast at breakfast. The pastel-pink peaks of the Parroquia church are a 10-minute stroll away, and it’s visible from your terrace garden if you’ve booked the rooftop suite (you should). Mi casa es tu casa – in this case, you can take that literally.
