Our favourite rooms
Adapted from the existing caves, rooms take their design cues from Santorini’s clean, whitewashed aesthetic; some have antique wooden furniture, bespoke Italian sofas, carved headboards or decorative mirrors. Canaves Oia Suites are spacious and airy, with marble floors, big bathrooms and their own sea-facing terrace and Jacuzzi hot tub. Junior Suite 24 has a quiet terrace facing fabulous caldera views. Just above it, the Honeymoon Suite has a very private terrace and sea views from the bed. With its square plunge pool hovering above the Aegean waters below, the Infinity Pool Suite is just made for satisfied selfies. In Canaves Oia Hotel, the Honeymoon Suite has a fun meandering river-like plunge pool reached by steps from the bathroom.
Each property has its own unheated outdoor pool and guests are free to linger at both. The Suite’s pool is a romantic, curvaceous affair on the hotel’s lowest terrace, with two neat rows of sunloungers and parasols commanding startling caldera views. Meandering into a rock-hewn cave, the Hotel’s infinity pool is smaller but blissfully shaded; get cosy at the swim-up bar with your fellow guests and order something artfully mixed and perfectly chilled.
If tackling Santorini’s vertiginous steps isn’t exercise enough, Canaves Suites has a small but fully equipped gym with exercise bikes, weights, multi-disciplinary machines, treadmills and elliptical trainers. The spa has two treatment rooms that overlook the caldera; however, if you've booked one of the superlative massages, spa rituals or facials, you'll likely be oblivious. The spa's open from 10am to 7pm, but you can also book in-room treatments, including an indulgent lymphatic massage or signature treatment for two: a head-to-toe essential-oil massage finished off with a bottle of champagne and fresh strawberries. Private or semi-private yoga sessions are regularly held in a view-blessed spot too.
No Santorini capsule wardrobe should be without glamorous shades and flat grippy sandals.
Canaves Oia Suites boasts the island’s only lift, making its cliffside rooms more easily accessible to guests with reduced mobility, although they’ll still need to navigate a few steps from the main levels to the suites.
Leave the little Smiths at home: this made-for-romance hotel is a grown-up retreat.
