Style

Pearl of the Amalfi

Setting

Fit for Fellini

Borgo Santandrea is perched 90 metres above sea level, like a discerning seabird that’s decided to stay a while. A private beach, romantic rooms and delicious dining count among its Amalfi Coast charms. Sensibly letting what’s outside do the talking, the interiors are a serene, sophisticated vision of white and blue, with pearly marble, neutral hues and glittering glass singing the high notes. There’s a gym you probably won’t use and a library you definitely will (it doubles up as a restaurant and bar, after all); bonus points go to the negroni-acing staff.

Amalfi

Italy

Borgo Santandrea is an eye-pleasing addition to cliffside San Pietro in gorgeous Amalfi, on Italy’s southwest coast, backdropped by mountains.

Planes

Naples International Airport is a 90-minute drive away, and served by international carriers such as British Airways, Ryanair, Air France and more. Hotel transfers in a Mercedes are €190 each way. If you’re flying here from within Italy, catch a short domestic flight to nearby Salerno airport, 70 kilometres away.

Trains

Napoli is the closest station, 60 kilometres away from the hotel, with services connecting to Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Salerno.

Automobiles

If you want to bring wheels, there’s valet parking at the hotel. Be warned, though: the drive to the hotel (and around the Amalfi Coast in general) can be hair-raising. It takes just over an hour to reach the hotel from central Naples.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start by doing very little: kick back, relax and soak up those seaside views. Loll or LOL around on the private beach and only leave the sun, sea and sand behind for a meal at one of the three tempting hotel restaurants. Ask hotel staff to arrange a nautical-but-nice boat trip to admire the surrounding coast – and head off in time to see the sun set on the water. Continue the liquid thrills at the tiny Grotto dello Smeraldo cave, famed for its emerald waters. Head into eye-poppingly pretty Positano town and admire the beautiful architecture and seaside views; pause for a meal at a characterful trattoria and go large on vongole (clams). Jet off by boat to Capri for a stylish day trip. Take the boat from Amalfi to picture-perfect Lido degli Artisti private beach, accessed by a considerable number of stairs, but more than worth it thanks to its golden sands and ravishing restaurant.

Local restaurants

Enjoy perfect pizzas and just-grilled fish at super-chilled La Piazza da Nino on Via Roma in Conca dei Marini. Feast on succulent seafood, washed down with ice-cold Italian white wine, at Capo di Conca’s romantic restaurant; work up an appetite first by going for a swim it this charming beach resort’s slice of sea. Dress to impress for a meal at stylish Il San Pietro hotel, whose fine-dining restaurant attracts a glamorous, globetrotting crowd. Join them.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this Italian hotel in San Pietro and unpacked their bikinis and binoculars, a full account of their seaside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast…

Unleash your inner Adonis and Aphrodite at this celestial stay, which is perched alluringly on a cliffside in the San Pietro region, on the sparkling Amalfi Coast. As if its prime seaside setting wasn’t headily seductive enough, Borgo Santandrea generously throws a private, sandy beach into the equation, too. Sophisticated, restrained interiors sensibly play second fiddle to what’s outside, channelling a sky-and-earth theme with pops of white and blue, snowy marble, pearl-and-aqua tiles and geometric ceramics. Full-length windows galore mean you’re never more than a step away from a dazzling view or two. Enjoy delicious Mediterranean flavours on the terrace and toast your holiday with sherbet-y, ice-cold prosecco, or one of those potent negronis that the staff are so good at rustling up. Further afield, Amalfi’s billionaire-frequented beaches, ravishing seafood restaurants, glamorous boutiques, terraced vineyards and characterful fishing villages beckon…
