Aesthetically Aegean

Setting

Zeus-willing zen

Forget everything you’ve heard about Mykonian madness: Bonzoe Homes & Villas give you island ambience without the crowds. The seven villas are perched atop Megali Ammos beach on the outskirts of Chora, all with a private pool and sea view. Just like their location, the villas have a feel of uncluttered airiness – perhaps because of their sugar-cube-white walls, natural materials, muted tones and shaded pergolas, all festooned by the infinite blanket of the Aegean.

Need to know

Rooms

Seven secluded suites and villas, all with private pools.

Check–Out

11am, but flexible, subject to availability. Earliest check-in, 3pm.

More details

Rates include an organic breakfast in bed (or on the terrace, in the pool, in the shower – essentially anywhere in your villa that takes your fancy).

Also

The Cyclades take their name from the Greek kiklos, because they circle Delos – a sacred island and the mythical birthplace of Apollo, god of music and dance (which seems to have inspired Mykonos' nightlife).

Hotel closed

The hotel is open from April to October.

At the hotel

24-hour concierge, security, parking on site, 24-hour room service, Gym. In villas: WiFi, TV, sound system, tea- and coffee-making facilities, robes and slippers, beach towels, continental breakfast, infinity pool. Five rooms have a kitchenette, two have a barbecue.

Our favourite rooms

The one-bedroom home is a corner abode, giving it added peace, privacy and a perimeter of palm trees.

Poolside

Each and every room has its own heated pool so you can dip in and out of the Mykonos heat – ranging from the lounge suite’s plunger to the two-bedroom villa’s nine-metre-wide infinity pool.

Packing tips

Suitcase space to take a piece of Mykonos home with you – if you’re so taken after browsing the boutiques for island-inspired beachwear, jewellery, artwork and local crafts.

Children

Two- and three-bedroom villas have plenty of room for families; babysitting can be arranged for a night out on the Chora cobbles (with 24 hours’ notice).

Food and Drink

Dress Code

It’s your home-from-home, so PJs are more than acceptable, no matter the time of day. Otherwise, linens fit well with the Bonzoe aesthetic, and whites and blues are always welcome in Mykonos.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no restaurant at Bonzoe, but the food and drink offering is 24 hours and delivered to your door. That said: a fruit platter on your sunken terrace sofa; a chef-helmed barbecue in your backyard – ‘room service’ doesn’t quite cover the in-villa dining at Bonzoe.

Room service

There's a room service menu available until 9.30pm.

Address
Bonzoe Suites & Villas
Megali Ammos
Mikonos
846 00
Greece

Bonzoe’s seven suites are perched atop Megali Ammos beach on the outskirts of Chora, Mykonos.

Planes

Your private hideaway is just 15 minutes from JTM (Mykonos International Airport). Bonzoe can arrange your transfer – starting at €40, one way.

Automobiles

A car is definitely not a necessity, due to Bonzoe’s excellent island location, but if you do wish to drive then you’ll find a private car park on site, with plenty of spaces shaded from the heat.

Other

Island hoppers can set sail to Tinos, Siros, Naxos, Paros and Rafina – boats nose the harbour walls of the island’s new port.

Worth getting out of bed for

Difficult decisions will be made here: should you soak up the sun from your private terrace and pool, or from one of the island’s many beaches? Psarou is one of our favourites because of its bottle-clear water; Fokos is an off-the-beaten-path bay – its horseshoe arch is to the north of the island, and you don’t even have to pay for a sunbed (okay, fine, that’s because there aren’t any). Navigate the curling walkways of Chora to the boutiques lining Matogiannia street, and head west to see the windmills up close; they’re one of the island's most iconic sights, after all. Watch as the sun paints the sky golden-pink from here, or from the hill of Armenistis Lighthouse – another surviving ancient landmark. Back down by the waves you’ll find quaint Little Venice, a waterside strip of wooden balconies, bars and walkways leaning over the lapping turquoise waves.

Local restaurants

Scorpios is a seriously sought-after beach club: the restaurant doubles up as an artists’ community, and as such the atmosphere is mellow and bohemian. The food is a showcase of the delectable Mediterranean diet, served on sea-front communal tables. It’s hard to miss the queue for Kiki’s, a teeny taverna by Agios Sostis beach. It might appear humble, but the fresh charcoal-grilled seafood draws serious crowds, and for good reason. Another local option is Avli Tou Thodori – go Greek here with feta cheese pastries, chicken souvlaki, grilled Mykonian mushrooms and Mediterranean fig salads. The candlelit cliffside setting of La Taverna is enough to enchant diners, but the stuffed vine leaves and salt-baked sea bass are seriously good, too. Serious (sea)food lovers will likely already know about Koursaros on the edge of Little Venice. The icing-sugar-white dining room buzzes with life as red mullet, sole, dorado, and jumbo prawns arrive at tables hissing-hot.  Life’s a beach (party) at Kalua, which begins the day as a sophisticated seafront bar but becomes increasingly boisterous as bottles pop and beats spin. Cavo Paradiso is a Mykonian megaclub, with nights hosted by the likes of Benny Benassi and Peggy Gou. Scorpios makes a great sandy sundowner spot, as does 180 Sunset Bar, where the sky seems to be constantly technicolour. Settle in on the Moroccan-style pouffes and order a round of Drunk Pirate cocktails – nature will provide the entertainment.

On arrival at Mykonos airport, the searing heat of the day made me feel foolish for still wearing my jumper and desperate to change into more holiday-friendly clothes. So Mr Smith and I hopped in a cab and after just a 20-minute drive arrived at boutique retreat Bonzoe Suites & Villas where we were staying for two days, until departing by ferry for some Greek island exploring. The hotel has just seven rooms and villas, so it still has that intimate, small-scale feel. Almost all are booked up during our stay, but due to the clever lay-out we don’t hear or see a peep out of any other guests.

We’re led to our villa by a welcoming member of staff, being guided past a wall heaving with trailing vines of fuchsia bougainvillaea to our tucked-away room. Our terrace has views straight out to sea, with a private heated pool front and centre, framed by blue skies and waters – a sight that really does pack a punch. A garden stretches out in front of the pool flanked by tall grasses swaying softly in the wind in a hypnotising manner, making it all the more private and adding some relaxing ASMR swishing.

The look is low-key luxury, with a modern, functional exterior. We stayed in the One Bedroom Suite Sea View Villa, a generously proportioned hideaway with high ceilings, decorated in a calming neutral palette. Rattan wardrobes add a stylish touch, and playful glass light fittings a soft glow. The whole aesthetic – from the taupe-hued furnishings to a super-soft bed you’ll have to drag yourself away from – encourages you to do just one thing: relax. I jumped in the shower to freshen myself up and ended it wrapped in a towel Googling the brand name of the toiletries, as my hair has never smelt so good. Botanica, by the way – you’re welcome.

Bonzoe is perfectly positioned on the island behind Paralia Megali Ammos Beach, just a 10-minute drive or 20-minute stroll along the coast from Mykonos town. It’s a perfect base from which to explore the island, whether you want cosmopolitan shopping and dining or to hop the quieter beaches in the north, from here you can discover the Mykonos you want.

We arrived hungry, so headed into town for lunch where we grabbed some vegan food and stopped to check out Gioras Wood Medieval Mykonian Bakery, which is rather hidden, with only a small sign outside hinting at what’s within. Enter and you discover a cavern filled with delicious pastries that has been serving since the 18th century. Glass cabinets showcase all-too-tempting nut-studded chocolates, baklava and homemade pastries, and I leave with a bag full of Greek delicacies to try. It’s also a great place to have a morning coffee and pick up snacks for a picnic on the beach. And, a recommended spot we didn’t manage to make it to was traditional grill restaurant Kiki’s Tavern, positioned near Agios Sostis Beach – one for the return visit.

After navigating the maze of paths that make up Mykonos town, we were excited to get back to our little enclave to enjoy those last rays of lingering sun and take up the staff’s suggestion of ordering some food in (there’s only room service on-site). I mean, we wouldn’t have found a restaurant with a better view or ambience than where we were situated, so we did just that, dining on the terrace and drinking the free bottle of rosé that the staff left for us.

The next day we woke early wanting to make the most of the glorious weather. Some over-zealous ticking of the breakfast menu the night before means that the table is heaving with dishes: fresh juices, fruits, croissants, granola, yoghurt, omelettes…after which we need to lie down again beside the pool. Staying here you can easily imagine this to be your own villa, but with the luxuries of a high-end hotel and staff on hand to help you at any moment; always discreet and reliable, and reachable on Whatsapp, which myself and Mr Smith found really useful, pinging over any questions we had and sorting multiple bookings with ease. In fact, the amazing service comes up repeatedly in online reviews; deservedly so, as it really is formidable.

Our private pool looks out onto the sea and is framed by the comfiest seating arrangement – no plastic sunloungers here, instead a huge cushioned sofa, giant chair and a padded day-bed. Enough to play musical chairs with, which we do later in the day as the sun starts to set, with me trying out each seating option, Goldilocks-style. (I can assure you they were all equally comfortable.) Lounging around outside all day, reading books in our just-right spot, sheltered from the wind and concealed from the world, we feel utterly at peace.

Bonzoe really comes into its own in the evenings; as the sun sets, the sky melts into ombré reds and oranges, with boats in the foreground peacefully passing by into port. It’s so mesmerising I have to tear myself from my lounge chair and change quickly because we’re running late for dinner. We head into town and stop at Eva’s Garden, a traditional restaurant with a small simple menu and a beautiful location, tucked away on a quiet street, with a vine-wrapped veranda that’s a sanctuary from the bustling streets.

If we were staying anywhere else, we may have gone out for drinks after dinner but Bonzoe Suites & Villas’ unique magic and superlative setting – and that unbeatable view – draws us back, this time and likely in the future too.
