Setting

Mountain-framed Marbella

In tune with its name, Boho Club is unconventional compared to its glitzy Marbella surroundings. Its low-lying white-washed walls belie the higher-than-the-last golden mile hotels: opting instead for Balinese-style bungalows and sunset-facing terraced rooms. We love that it’s small enough for personal touches – you’ll find a hand-written envelope in your room detailing what’s on during your stay – but big enough to have two cacti-lined pools, two restaurants and a cocktail bar. And really, the food is reason enough to visit: expect freshly made cavatelli, lobster gyozas and seasonal vegetable risotto.

The hotel’s grounds are dotted with one-of-a-kind artworks, including Richard Hudsons’ polished mirrored steel ‘Adam’, paintings by Claire Tabouret, and photography by Lawrence Schiller and David La Chapelle.

At the hotel

WiFi, two pools, outdoor gym, bikes to borrow, laundry service (for an additional fee). In rooms: TV with Chromecast, Domotica control system for music, lights and air con, Nespresso machine, desk, robe and slippers, pool towels, tea-making facilities, minibar, I Love Eco Essentials toiletries

Our favourite rooms

One-bedroom bungalows look out to the grounds – dotted with banana trees, cacti and towering palms; garden rooms have terrace-to-tile access to the pool.

Poolside

There are two turquoise pools: one is bordered by the balconies of the hotel rooms; the other by the bungalows and Bernies bar. Both have sunbeds or hammocks, and are open 9am–9pm. Or, if you need to sweat out the tequila shots from the night before, you’ll find weights, TRX equipment and cardio machines in the outdoor gym.

Packing tips

Boho Club has a boutique on-site, so avoid any pre-holiday panic-buying and pick what feels right for that night straight from the rack.

Pet‐friendly

Small dogs (that weigh less than five bags of sugar) are welcome at Boho Club. See more pet-friendly hotels in Marbella.

Children

Two-bedroom bungalows have plenty of room for the family, and Bernies has kid-friendly burgers, hot dogs and falafel wraps. If you'd like a babysitter, ask reception and they'll be happy to organise one for you.

Sustainability efforts

Boho Club limit the use of throwaway plastic miniatures, instead providing full-size refillable toiletries by I Love Eco Essentials (that happen to smell great, too). They’ve built their own plastic-free water collection plant and filter on site, and the products used in their restaurant are local, seasonal and largely organic – including honey from Ronda, olive oil from Malaga, and wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Bag table 37 for indoor-outdoor dining – it’s tucked just inside the floor-to-ceiling doors opening out onto the terrace.

Dress Code

There are no rights or wrongs, but you could choose to embody the bohemian spirit with billowing dresses, breezy tailoring or balloon sleeves.

Hotel restaurant

Chef Diego del Rio’s ever-evolving seasonal menu uses top quality ingredients – 90 per cent of which are from local suppliers. Try the cold corn soup, the lobster gyozas, or the market fish with fresh cavatelli and pickled butter. Meals here begin with a basket of fresh focaccia and sourdough, served with olive oil from Malaga – theatrically poured from a height into your own personal dipping bowl – but make sure to leave room for the delicate lemon tart for dessert, too. The poolside Bernies restaurant serves more casual fare but with the same flair: red tuna tiradito, miso salmon salads and guacamole prepared in front of your table.

Hotel bar

A strong cocktail offering is the main draw to Boho Bar, a dark and stormy setting with plenty of artisan cocktail creations. The Viaje a Cuba is an eclectic mix of rum, roasted pineapple, nutmeg and cinnamon syrup, which is then smoked with cigar tobacco. ¡Salud!

Last orders

Call for la cuenta at 11.30pm in the main restaurant, and head into the Boho Bar until 2am. Bernies pool bar is open 11am–5pm.

Room service

Seafood pasta, burgers, salads and other light meals comprise the hotel’s in-room dining offering, available 8am–11pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

It’s impossible to miss it: La Concha makes for a mountainous backdrop to Boho Club, but also a brilliant all-day hike (not for the faint hearted, given the strength of the Spanish sun). Marbella old town and Puerto Banús are within cycling distance, but we’d also recommend going further afield to one of Andalucia’s pueblos blancos – mountain-side Mijas is all white-wash, blue flower pots and lush green gardens with bird’s-eye views of the coast. There’s plenty to warrant a day trip here: miniature museums, local markets, a hilltop chapel and exceptional tapas. People live quite publicly here – life spills out from sitting rooms to the streets – so you’ll get an authentic insight into Spanish life, too.

Local restaurants

Lobito de Mar is dubbed as a chiringuito without the beach, given the urban restaurant’s focus on Andalusian seafood and rice dishes. Try the fresh-as-can-be arroz negro, pulpo a la gallega and a Spanish seaside staple: anchovies with olive juice. You’ll find tapas with a twist at epicurean BiBo brasserie. We loved the Ronda chorizo and sweet onions on brioche, the creamy ink croquettes, and fried aubergines with puttanesca. Pizzeria Picassio is a great lunch option in Puerto Banús – the caramelised goats cheese salad is perfect to share alongside a pizza, right in the heart of the harbour. Get your Sunday roast fix at Max beach – ask for a table on the veranda and eat your yorkshires to a backdrop of crashing ocean waves.

Local bars

For sake, strong cocktails and a side of sushi, head to Mosh Fun Kitchen (you won’t end up in an actual mosh pit, promise). Astral bar has been moored up in Puerto Banús harbour for a while, and has no plans to set sail anytime soon – the wood galleon is a popular spot serving fruity cocktails under its sails. Max beach is a great day-drinking option, given its pool-side DJ and beachfront location. The fresh mango spritz, mimosa margarita and pink floyd mayweather (raspberry Absolut, Bulldog gin, Puerto de Indias, red berries and berry tonic) make for great sundowner companions.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this white-washed hotel in Andalucia and unpacked their boutique buys, a full account of their beachside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Boho Club in Marbella…

Leafy banana trees, prickly cacti and jade-green velvet furniture decorate the white-washed surrounds of Boho Club, a hotel rooted in mindfulness. Sure, it’s in central Marbella (there are San Miguels and Spanish wines in the minibar), but you’ll also find vitamin-filled ‘repair’ juices therein. Similarly, the thrum of the hotel bar is just down the cobbled path, but so is the outdoor gym, peaceful pergola and art gallery. In fact, Boho Club breaks many of the Marbs rules: the resident DJ spins beats that aren’t in the charts, the grounds host yoga classes instead of pool parties, and the bungalows are compellingly quiet. And yet you’re three minutes walk from the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol; a five-minute taxi from Puerto Banús’s bars; and 20 minutes by bike from Marbella old town. Think of Boho Club as your own, private, pueblos blancos pad.
