Setting

Shores of East Boothbay

Standing shipshape along East Boothbay’s rugged shoreline, Bluebird Ocean Point Inn puts Mid-coast Maine’s on- and off-shore delights within plain sailing distance. Pine forests and rolling hills back the New England-inspired cottages, rooms and suites, each decked out in nautical striped fabrics and exposed wood. It’s the all-encompassing Atlantic views from the porches, outdoor pool and restaurant which are the hotel’s true siren call, though.

Our favourite rooms

Food and Drink

Top Table

Every table overlooks Card Cove’s crashing waves, it’s just a question of how close to the water you can sit.

Dress Code

The more you look like you’ve just stepped off a boat, the better. Go overboard with nautical stripes, fisherman knits and ribbed roll-necks.

Hotel restaurant

The freezing Atlantic waters surrounding the hotel give Maine seafood its sweet edge, and you can expect a fish-focused menu at Ocean Point Kitchen. Sea-fresh dishes such as local rope-grown mussels, New England clam chowder and lobster rolls are served right on the waterfront, with vintage artworks on the ceilings and the blue expanse at eye-level.

Hotel bar

Ocean Point Kitchen’s bar is a perfectly positioned watering hole with local ales on tap, thoughtfully selected wines (especially when paired with seafood), and classic cocktails on the menu. Ask for the Donovan, a sailor-strong, rum-based tipple named after the friendly mixologist who’s been helming the bar for years.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7.30am to 10am, and dinner from 4pm to 9pm. The bar pours from 3pm to 10pm.

Address
Bluebird Ocean Point Inn
191 Shore Road
East Boothbay
04544
United States

Bluebird Ocean Point Inn is scattered across a rocky shoreline overlooking Oaks Island and Card Cove, around 10-minutes’ drive from Boothbay Harbor in Mid-coast Maine.

Planes

Portland International Jetport is around 90 minutes by car from the hotel, and is well-connected to major US hubs such as New York and Chicago.

Automobiles

There’s free parking and electric-vehicle charging stations at the hotel; once you’re in Boothbay though, bicycles and boats are the best ways to get around.

Other

As one of the busiest boating centers on the Maine coast, it’s tricky to drop anchor in Boothbay Harbor itself; but there are moorings and berths in Mill Cove and McFarland Point if you’re arriving by sea.

Worth getting out of bed for

Bluebird Ocean Point Inn’s on-the-water setting encourages wet (and often wild) ways to spend your stay. Rent a kayak and paddle over to Burnt Island Lighthouse (only accessible from the water), or make your heading for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, home to a native butterfly house, bee exhibit, meditation garden, and swathes of woodland across 300 acres of the nature-protecting site. Take the three-mile Shoreland Trail for the chance to spot otters, red squirrels and all manner of birds among the trees, which ends at a postcard-perfect dock overlooking Back River. In Boothbay Harbor, Schooner Eastwind and Applejack (the town’s oldest windjammer) depart on daily sailing trips and sunset cruises along the Maine coastline, and Mainetain Charters skippers fishing trips for families through to experienced anglers. Cap’n Fish’s Cruises runs educational lobster tours and sea-faris, where you’ll need to keep your eyes on the waves for whales, dolphins, seals and puffins.

Local restaurants

An easy five-minutes’ drive up Ocean Point Road brings you to Linekin Bay, and the sea-to-table servings at Carriage House restaurant. Alongside the signature haddock sandwiches, lobster pappardelle and seared scallops, this popular waterfront joint hosts taco-and-margarita nights on Tuesdays, wood-fired pizza nights on Thursdays, Friday fish-and-chip specials and Dove Cove oysters each Saturday. If you’re visiting between mid-June and Labor Day, join the Moore family for a traditional Downeast clambake on nearby Cabbage Island (take the Bennie Alice from Pier 6 in Boothbay Harbor). Fish chowder, fresh lobsters and clams are cooked over open fires on the water’s edge, between thick layers of seaweed for extra saltiness.

Local cafés

Enjoy your morning brew and oven-fresh pastry from Brisetto’s Second Cup, which overlooks Boothbay Harbor from its cozy second-floor seating area.

Local bars

Whether you’re after something light, hoppy or malty, Boothbay Craft Brewery’s small-batch beers, ales and lagers wash down hearty barbecue briskets, smoked wings and loaded nachos. A more spirited selection is on offer at Neat, with over 300 bottles of bourbon, whiskey flights and an impressive cocktail list to keep you sipping (and satisfied) all evening.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this seafront stay in East Boothbay and unpacked their windbreakers and boat shoes, a full account of their New England escape will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Bluebird Ocean Point Inn in Maine…

It all started in Kennebunkport, Maine for Lark Hotels in 2012, with Bluebird Ocean Point Inn adding to the brand’s home state collection of revamped boutique stays. The inn’s Boothbay Harbor setting is less star-studded than A-list favorite Kennebunkport, but its sheltered coves and calm waters draw a laidback boating crew to kayak in dolphin-dotted bays, head offshore on vintage schooners, and join beachfront clambakes with local families. Landlubbers will soon be hooked too, with plenty of forest trails to take from the hotel’s front door, and fire pits to gather around with s’mores and Boothbay-brewed beers. Many of the cottages and rooms come with coastal outlooks, awash with far-reaching views across Linekin Bay and Card Cove from your bedroom window, private porch, or Adirondack lawn chair (preferably with one of the kitchen’s lobster rolls in hand).
