Setting

Mid-Cape crashpad

Family-friendly Bluebird Dennisport sets the blueprint for a bucket, spade and sundaes kind of summer in Cape Cod. At this pared-back coastal basecamp, days pass with a scrapbook’s worth of pool splashing, fire-warmed stargazing and freewheeling down to the beach or the local ice-cream parlor. Zen-inspired rooms and contemporary cottages keep its aesthetic the right side of retro, but if this summer’s still looking a little rose-tinted, it’s not your specs — that’s just how this place rolls.

Hotel closed

The hotel opens between May and October each year.

At the hotel

Hot tub, hammocks, fire pits, vending machines and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: fridge, microwave and Ursa Major bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Any room here would make a worthy post-beach crashpad, with understated, beachy interiors and a seating area out on a shared verandah. Families or friend quartets might prefer the added privacy of the Two-Bedroom Cottages, which each have their own patio and fire pit.

Poolside

The outdoor pool and deck forms the hotel’s cheery focal point; between paddles, thumb a paperback on a sunlounger shaded by a striped butter-yellow parasol. Or cultivate a healthy glow with a few lengths of the greenhouse-style indoor pool or a stint in the adjacent hot tub.

Packing tips

Bring the whole gang’s bikes for wholesome expeditions along the historic local cycle trails (or just down the road for a hot fudge sundae). If hauling your own wheels on holiday is a step too far, there are bike rental shops nearby.

Also

You can buy s’mores kits from reception – the hotel’s fire pits were made for starlit, sticky-fingered feasts.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs weighing up to 70lb are welcome. There’s a pet fee of $35 a dog each night, and a maximum of two dogs a room. Your furry pals can join you in outdoor communal areas, but must be on the leash at all times and can’t be left alone in rooms. See more pet-friendly hotels in Cape Cod.

Children

All ages are welcome.

Best for

All ages are welcome, but there’s no baby kit provided. Kids who get a kick out of pool paddles and beach expeditions will do best here.

Recommended rooms

There are no cribs or pack ’n’ plays, but spacious options for families include the Two-Bedroom Cottages and two-bedroom King Suites: the latter has a second bedroom with bunk beds and can sleep a fifth guests on a day-bed (made up on request).

Activities

Little Smiths can go full summer camp here, playing tag on the lawns, toasting marshmallows around the fire pits and pedaling down to the beach.

Swimming pool

There's no lifeguard at either pool, but children can swim in either, supervised by an adult, from 8am until sunset (around 7pm). And hours at the outdoor pool are weather dependent.

Address
Bluebird Dennisport

Dennisport

United States

Bluebird Dennisport’s home is a cool coastal village, quieter than the usual Cape Cod summer haunts and a 10-minute stroll from Sea Street Beach, where golden sands meet the Nantucket Sound.

Planes

Boston Logan is the nearest international airport, around a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. Alternatively, flights from Boston, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, as well as seasonal flights from US hubs including New York La Guardia and Chicago O’Hare, touch down at Cape Cod Gateway Airport. From there, it’s around a 30-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

You’ll want your own wheels for coasting around the Cape. There’s free outdoor private parking at the hotel.

Other

If you have your eye on some island hopping, the hotel’s a 30-minute drive from Hyannis, where you can catch a ferry to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you’re after some sandcastle action, you’ve lucked out –– Sea Street Beach, a quiet golden-sand stretch, is a 10-minute walk away. Further afield, on the Cape’s north coast, Mayflower Beach is a family favorite with its soft sand, mellow waters and rock pools. Otherwise, hike or bike the historic Cape Cod Rail Trail from Dennis to Wellfleet, peeling off towards the coast whenever clam chowder or an ice cold beer sounds like an idea. At Cape Cod Waterways, you can captain your own canoe, kayak, pedalboat or stand-up paddleboard from the serene Swan Pond River down to Nantucket Sound. Set in an 18th-century sea captain’s house in Chatham, the Atwood Museum gives an immersive look into the history of New England life. And back in Dennis, Cape Cod Museum of Art celebrates homegrown modern artists.

Local restaurants

At the Ocean House, elegant pan-Asian plates spotlight locally caught seafood, but the real scene-stealer is the sweeping view across Nantucket Sound. Red Cottage Restaurant is a much-loved local diner, going strong since 1951. The all-American staples are covered, including pancakes, waffles and eggs however you like them. Ask for the first-timer menu and you’ll be pointed to time-tested signature dishes – the loaded home fries with lemon hollandaise have our name on them.

Local cafés

Swing by Woolfie's Bakery for huge homemade muffins and cold brew kept strong till the last sip with their secret weapon: coffee ice cubes. Sundae School, a Cape Cod staple since the Seventies, does retro the right way, with ice cream made in-house daily and sundaes piled with real whipped cream and fresh seasonal fruit. Hot fudge is the house specialty, but it might be sensible to stop back in to try a few more, too –– you know, just to be sure.

Local bars

Cleat and Anchor is a laidback local tavern serving craft beers from across New England. For an elevated evening out, book in at wine bar and bistro Lune. Against a backdrop lifted from the pages of Architectural Digest, Cape Cod cool kids Charlotte and Mick pair organic and biodynamic bottles with small plates spun from hyper-local produce. Bonus: it’s within walking distance, so you can un-designate that driver.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this come-as-you-are hotel on Cape Cod and unpacked their straw hats and Sperry boat shoes, a full account of their seaside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Bluebird Dennisport in Massachusetts…

The quintessential Cape Cod summer has been mapped across generations: sandcastles and salty-aired strolls seeping into fire-crackled nights under the stars. No need, then, for Bluebird Dennisport to chart new waters. Design-wise, granted, the hotel steers clear of the twee New England template. An ancient mariner meets Marie Kondo in zen-like rooms accented with the odd nautical touch, and two standalone cottages pair fisherman’s cabin paneling with cool, curated design pieces.

But this family-friendly stay is anchored in a quiet mid-Cape neighborhood, where beachfront seafood spots, a Fifties diner and a family-run ice-cream parlor form a sweet-as-pie backdrop. Bluebird adds a parasol-lined outdoor pool and cozy fire pits into the mix, cueing the kind of summer scenes best captured on an old-school Kodak. For a coastal home base or a wholesome mid-road trip stopover, this is where to set your compass.
