Sailor’s delight

Setting

Anchored by Dock Square

The old sea captain who once lived in what’s now quaint bed and breakfast Awol Kennebunkport would be thrilled to see the smooth-sailing way it operates. Staff are on hand to tailor itineraries to you; whether that’s navigating to the closest seafood shacks and exploring secluded coves. Deciding whether to retire to your room’s pine-shrouded patio and spacious soaking tub is the only tough decision you’ll face. Either way, it gets a hearty ‘yar’ from us.

Unfortunately the layout of the land and rough terrain at Awol Kennebunkport makes it unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.

Our favourite rooms

It’s hard to decide between the 19th-century Melville Walker House — formerly home to a sea captain of the same name — or a standalone cabin if you take your seclusion seriously. The latter have private patios, adorned with fire pits and fringed by a lofty pine grove.

Packing tips

Once your walking shoes and trouser clips are packed, be sure you’ve got a strong craving for lobster and you’ll be all set to fall fast for this East Coast expanse.

If you’re arriving from outside the US, Boston Logan International Airport is a little over 90 minutes away by car. Staff can arrange private transfers for an additional charge.

Kennebunkport is fairly easy to explore on foot or by bike, so a set of wheels won’t be essential. If you’ve come by car, there’s free parking on-site.

Worth getting out of bed for

Awol Kennebunkport puts you steps from Gooch’s Beach, where wave breaks draw surfers year-round. If you aren’t yet an expert on the board, Aquaholics run surfing lessons, and has kayaks and paddleboards to rent for anyone who’d rather stick to the calmer waters. Parson’s Beach is a slightly further 15-minute cycle, but worth the journey for its secluded coves and almost-empty sands. Sailboat cruises, on, say, the Schooner Eleanor take you along the Kennebunkport River and you can spy whales between May and October.

Bird-watchers will have their pick of the flocks, too, down the six-mile Bridle Path or at the Emmons Preserve, which runs along the Batson River. And Walker’s Point is a bikers’ and hikers’ haven. In town, there's plenty of antique shops and locally owned boutiques to mooch around in. Maine is big on beer, and buffs can follow the Beer Trail guide to sample some of its home brews.

Local restaurants

Where better to begin than with one of this State’s signature lobster rolls? The locally loved Clam Shack, just a short walk away serves them fresh, dripping in butter. The seafood is storied for its flavor at the Boathouse Restaurant, a laidback, waterfront spot on Ocean Avenue. Earth at Hidden Pond is just outside of town, but take the 15-minute drive there and you’ll be rewarded with a romantic setting, fresh oysters and homegrown fare.

Local cafés

Pack your picnic with freshly baked goodies from Cape Porpose Kitchen, or head to the long-loved Rococo Artisan Ice Cream shop for a mid-afternoon cool down.

Local bars

The Old Vines Wine Bar is a Kennebunkport institution, where locals gather to sip glasses from vintage bottles and sample light coastal bites. Immerse yourself in the beer scene with a perfectly pulled pint at Federal Jack’s, a pub-like restaurant with harbor views, where ales are handcrafted on-site.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Awol Kennebunkport…

Things aren’t as they once were at Awol Kennebunkport, a boutique bed and breakfast along Maine’s charming southern coast. Back in the 1860s, this traditional estate was just another suburban home in a quiet, leafy neighborhood, belonging to an old sea captain and his high-school sweetheart.

The mansion’s quaint façade still stands today, but behind its doors interiors have been deftly renovated to tell a different tale. Where Abbie (the captain’s wife) once stood to watch out for her husband’s return is now the coveted split-level Cupola Suite (still with many view-blessed windows for wistful-gazing fans). Outside, amid pine trees which have loomed overhead for centuries, lacing walkways lead to cozy, standalone cabins with private patios and fire pits for lingering till late. It’s not quite as nautical as it used to be thanks to stylish modern dressing, but down by Dock Square you’ll find subtle nods to Kennebunkport’s seafaring heritage in waterfront eateries with lauded lobster rolls, and enough breweries to sink a sailor. If you go overboard, don’t worry, there’s a soft bunk back at Awol.
