Roaring Twenties reboot

Setting

Laidback Lake Zürich

Ameron Zürich Bellerive au Lac is a four-star art deco block with both lake and city delights right on the doorstep. Constructed in 1928, the building’s Roaring Twenties roots are still firmly on display in its refurbished form. Although these days it roars a little quieter in favour of relaxation. The lobby lounge, with its chequerboard floor and hanging plants, is a refined place to linger with a coffee, and the light-filled restaurant, with its brass and curving contours, is a soul-soothing space. Tasteful, orderly and peaceful, Ameron is just the place to retire to after a day exploring all Zürich has to offer.

Our favourite rooms

At Ameron Zürich Bellerive au Lac, all guest rooms stick to a common theme, with the same rich blues, watery greys and gently curving headboards making an appearance. We liked the slight bump in luxury that comes with the fifth-floor Premium room, with clever mirror panels reflecting the view of the lake and sky outside. For its bigger proportions and extra flashes of decorative va-va-voom, the Junior Suite with the lake view gets our top vote, with its balconies, roomier bathroom, dining area and swish curvy sofa seating.

Reuse of towels and linens is encouraged and taps are fitted with aerators to reduce water waste. Bath products come in special dispensers to reduce waste, and staff are trained in waste separation for recycling.

Understated elegance to rival that Swiss sophistication.

Hotel restaurant

Marcel Oesterreich is the chef at the culinary helm of the good ship Studio Bellerive, the hotel’s glamorous art deco-themed grill and brasserie, all deep-blue banquettes, aqua tiling and gleaming brass fittings. Worth getting out of bed for

Ameron Zürich Bellerive au Lac’s position gifts its residents easy access to both the lake and the city sights. Start off with a cruise around Lake Zürich or a boat trip along the River Limmat. From lido to lake, Zürich is a prime bathing destination – take your pick from the Zürich Badis, a collection of pleasant public swimming spots.

The hotel is a six-minute walk from Zürich Opera House, which hosts opera and ballet performances, and a 10-minute walk to Bahnhofstrasse, the main shopping drag that’s home to lots of well-known brands. You can discover independent boutiques and grab a locally made souvenir in the converted Viadukt Arches or in the Old Town shops. You can tour the city by Segway, by boat or on foot with a guide.

On the opposite bank of the lake, around a 20-minute drive away, you’ll find Lindt Home of Chocolate, a huge museum of chocolate complete with a giant chocolate fountain. Golfers can access a nine-hole course at Dolder Golfclub, which is just 12 minutes away by car.

Local restaurants

At the longstanding Kronenhalle restaurant, you can gaze at an original Chagall over your plate of veal schnitzel with rösti. For something more modern try the small plates (such as pumpkin strudel with truffle or sturgeon with black cabbage) and leisurely vibes of Maison Manesse. Rosaly’s serves classics like Wienerschnitzel and chef’s specials such as côte de boeuf, and there’s sushi and sake aplenty at casual Ginger.

Local bars

Bar am Wasser is the place for waterside cocktails (try the Hakuna Tomata with bourbon, tomato, dry curaçao and vermouth) and Odeon, former haunt of Einstein, no less, provides a historic café-bar setting that’s just right for a glass of fizz.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this lakeside hotel in Zürich and unpacked their peerless timepieces, a full account of their Swiss city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Ameron Zürich Bellerive au Lac in Zürich…

The glossy lobby, the swanky cigar lounge, the chic co-working area: this Ameron offering makes quite the first impression. This late-Twenties building has been a hotel since the Thirties. In the restaurant (formerly a film studio), appealing art deco shapes and hues abound, along with tall windows giving prime people-watching views of the street outside, and a superb curving bar ringed with high stools. Upstairs, guest rooms are subtler, with a soothing maritime palette, Modernist-style framed prints and understated marbled shower rooms. The lake-view rooms are sure to coax out the inner yachtie in even the most stubborn landlubber, although both are well catered for in this eclectic city.
