From the rooftop plunge pool, you can enjoy sweeping, Manhattan skyline views and even catch a glimpse of Lady Liberty. Family-friendly and unheated, with a shallow three-foot depth, this is a spot for soaking in rather than splashing. This is fair season swimming pool that's only open during the spring and summer. Hotel restaurant

The Osprey offers market-driven American comfort food morning, noon and night. Their signature breakfast includes eggs any style, garlic parmesan potatoes, roast tomatos, and bacon or sausages, although there are also a few lighter options like the grapefruit brûlée or egg white fritatas. For lunch, take a seat on one of the long leather banquets and order a few of the small plates to share. If you can't decide which to order, many of these dishes are available as starters at dinner, so you'll haBerkshire pork chop with pickled peppers and hierloom grits. At Neighbors café on the ground floor, you’ll find a fresh menu of sandwiches, salads and flatbreads, an extensive selection of coffees and freshly pressed juices, and goods from Brooklyn vendors – including muffins, bagels, yogurt, brownies and cookies.

Hotel bar

The Brooklyn Heights Social Club offers tempting tipples with front row views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River from its 10th floor perch. The drink's list is sorted by spritis so find your favourite boozy base and then take your pick. The Osprey bar's cocktail list has a drink to suit all tastes; gin-lovers will enjoy the Sparrow, there's something magical about the rum-based Merlin and vodka fans should opt for the house soecial, the Osprey with vodka, cactus water, passionfruit, lime and lavender: you can also order their cocktails in the adjacent lobby lounge. Up on the 10th floor, seasonal 1 Rooftop has panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, alfresco seating and a plunge pool. Address
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
60 Furman St
Brooklyn
11201
United States

The hotel is right on Brooklyn Heights promenade, next to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Planes

LaGuardia is the closest airport, only 10 miles away (a 40-minute drive, depending on traffic). Flights from all over the world land at JFK, the busiest international airport in the US; the 13-mile drive to the hotel usually takes about 50 minutes.

Trains

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge can be easily reached from a number of subway stations, including High Street, York Street, Clark Street, Court Street and Borough Hall.

Automobiles

The city has an abundance of taxis and public transportation options, so having a car isn’t really necessary. However, if you do bring your own wheels, the hotel's valet parking is $80 a night.

Other

The hotel is a five-minute walk from the Dumbo ferry terminal, from which you can hop on East River ferry to Manhattan. The New York Water Taxi also docks at Dumbo’s Pier 1.

Worth getting out of bed for

Keep an eye on the hotel’s film schedule for a cosy night in the screening room, and try to catch the Lobby Farmstand’s monthly tasting event, which features food and drink from local farmers and artisans. Venture outside to stroll along the promenade, down to Jane’s Carousel, a restored 1920’s merry-go-round in a very modern glass house, or over to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Although a bit further south, Brooklyn Botanic Garden is also easily reached and well worth a nature-filled visit. Whiskey-lovers will enjoy a visit to (and a tipple or two at) Kings County Distillery, New York City’s oldest operating distillery. It would be shame to not take advantage of your bridge-side location and walk or cycle across the Brooklyn Bridge; all that Manhattan has to offer is only a short subway- or ferry-ride away.

Local restaurants

On a cobblestone street just north of Dumbo, farmhouse-feel Vinegar Hill House specialises in homey cooking, as evidenced by its menu of skillet-cooked cornbread, pork chops and skillet-sizzled chicken. Book a table in advance, and request a seat in the cherry-tree-filled garden in warmer months. Williamsburg’s Lilia is the place to go for hand-crafted Italian pastas and wine; it’s in high demand, so make your reservations as early as possible. Try their take on cacio e pepe (pasta with cheese and pepper) or the squash-stuffed ravioli with hazelnuts and sage. Noodle Pudding in Brooklyn Heights (38 Henry Street) has been well loved by locals since the 1990s – it's cash only and they don't take reservations, but its heaped pasta bowls are worth these minor inconveniences. For croques and classic Gallic dishes (duck with orange gastrique, steak tartare, frogs legs in a honey sauce), bistro Chez Moi brings French-accented elegance to the table, and you can continue your night at their Marie Antoinette-inspired sister bar Le Boudoir.

Local cafés

That metal dining car from the 1920s just under Williamsburg Bridge? That’d be Diner, where waiters scribble the menu on your tablecloth and you can order grass-fed burgers that are a serious contender for the best in New York. It’s first-come, first-serve at this step-back-in-time eatery, so try to snag a seat when it opens at 6pm. Afterwards, hit up Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for all-natural ice cream with a view. On weekends, snack your way around Smorgasburg at the Brooklyn Flea Market, which hosts an impressive collection of on-trend food vendors with a range of temptations for every palate.

Local bars

Cocktail bar Sweet Polly has a jazzy collection of classic and house drinks, accompanied by a raw seafood-focused snack menu. You’ll feel like you’ve wandered south of the border when you enter Gran Electrica; embrace the feeling with a classic margarita eléctrica, mezcal- and maraschino cherry liqueur-based ¡ay mami! or the hot sauce-laced mi michelada. If you require sustenance for your tequila-fuelled evening, order at will from the Mexican street food-inspired menu.

When I lived in New York more than a decade ago, I never quite imagined the transformation of Dumbo – and most certainly wouldn’t have imagined one of the city’s most eco-conscious hotels would open its doors in this very Brooklyn neighbourhood.

After a long flight, my tiredness was met with the friendly, upbeat faces of the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge staff. Quite a contrast from the can’t-be-bothered nonchalance I’ve grown accustomed to in Paris, the city I currently call home.

Stepping into the hotel, you’re immediately struck by the enormous green vertical garden in the lobby. The soaring space and modern lines are softened by the rustic tones and natural materials that have been carefully chosen to furnish the interiors.

As I check in I notice a huge undulating black sculpture behind the desk – a sculpture, it turns out, by Brooklyn artist Jarrod Beck who created the site-specific piece from rubber strips blown off a rooftop by a tornado in upstate New York. Not your ordinary check-in desk decoration… I’m handed a small round wooden key, constructed from recycled material no doubt, and guided to my room.

Apart from its sweeping views, rugged-yet-inviting interiors, rooftop pool, spacious rooms, and Bamford spa, what really sets 1 Brooklyn – a purpose-built stay where there’s a story behind everything – apart is its commitment to the environment. Forget those friendly reminders to use your towels more than once, in one of the world’s most wasteful industries it was refreshing to find out the hotel is actually powered by wind and planted with vegetation native to the area.

When I stepped into my room, I felt like I was entering my own modern eco-cabin – with no sacrifice in design or comfort, mind. The thoughtful décor pays homage to the surrounding area’s historic industrial roots – I found out later that much of the material was taken from nearby Brooklyn factories – with reclaimed wood and earthy tones used throughout to create a serene space. Its open-plan layout makes the most of the majestic East River views.

It goes without saying that I definitely didn’t find any plastic bottles by my bed. Instead, a bespoke water filter installed in the wall for clean water on tap that you can pour into your bottle-green glass tumblers.

No menus or superfluous papers were in my room either. Instead, next to my bedside I found an iPad programmed with every amenity and service you could possibly need – room service menu is a few taps away; your favourite newspaper at your fingertips.

There isn’t a traditional restaurant as such. Instead there’s a farm stand of sorts, open nearly all day to serve freshly made, locally sourced fare. Should you need a quick trip around the surrounding neighbourhood, there are a few resident Teslas waiting out front to take you where you need to go. I couldn’t resist, so made an excuse to run to the local corner shop just to have a ride in one.

We all try to live better, waste less, contribute more to our local communities – yet somehow when we’re staying in hotels, most of these ideals fly out the window. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, though, is setting a new example in urban hospitality. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before more hotels follow suit.
