Spoiling spas and secluded island stays

This trip combines spa spoiling with Bali’s beauty spots: rice paddies, Sumbanese villages, river-carved valleys. It’s not just about prettifying; cultural refreshment is offered in temple and village visits. This trip can be made even more treating, too – an extra head massage? A budget-blowing Balinese meal? A little more eating, praying or loving? Just talk to our Smith24 team to ensure you get the trip you’re hungering for.
On arrival, after you clear immigration, a driver will be waiting to whisk you to your first stop, by private, air-conditioned car.

1.5 Hours

Days 1–3: Ubud

Ubud is Bali’s hilly cultural heart, where traditional handicraft (wood carving, painting and weaving) is practiced in a landscape of rice-paddy staircases rising up hills and serpentine valleys.

Well-heeled wellbeing

Jungle wonderland

Garden Room

There may be the odd trendsetter ‘finding themselves’ at lush luxury spa resort Como Shambhala, but it’s really more soothing than scenester. Como’s renowned spa brand is well-represented with top-to-toe pampering and a little holistic wellness for good measure. Have a simple massage or a stress-management regime mapped out: whatever works for you – but the hotel’s jungly setting will revivify with little effort.

Smith Extra

A Como Shambhala aromatherapy gift; GoldSmiths will also receive a 60-minute massage for two for five-night stays or more.

Day 1

Today you’re left at leisure – and while you’re resting at one of Bali’s premier spa stays, leisure is assured.

Day 2

Get a taste for healthful Indonesian cuisine on a culinary day trip.

Vegan cookery class and a visit to Taman Ayun Temple

Today you’ll dine and experience the divine. First up, a lesson in haloed dining at Fivelements cookery school, where you’ll learn to prep and appreciate raw, vegan cuisine before sampling your efforts at lunch. The team will talk you through juicing, sprouting, fermenting and mixing seasonal flavours. To follow, a trip to Mengwi – a small town long associated with the island’s royal family – where you’ll wander round lush, garden-set water-temple complex Taman Ayun: a tableau of towers set within a moat.

Day 3

Set off to discover Ubud’s breathtaking landscape.

Villages and valleys: a trek through Ubud

Bali’s natural majesty unfurls before you on this private, guided, half-day trek, which kicks off at Tukad Wos Valley, from which guests can ogle Gunung Agung volcano and the surrounding rice paddies and stop off in rural villages. You’ll come to a rest at intricately sculpted, eighth-century temple Gunung Lebah, before meandering by the Cerik and Wos rivers and along the holy Campuhan Ridge Walk, stopping to converse with locals along the way (with your guide’s help). To finish, you’ll stop for an open-air lunch by the Wos River.
A private driver will arrive to pick up you and your luggage for the transfer to Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar. From there, they’ll board a flight to Sumba Island (around an hour’s journey).

3 Hours

Days 4–8: Sumba Island

Largely untouched by development, Indonesia's Sumba Island is a lush haven for surfers and serenity seekers.

Nihi Sumba

Breeze-kissed hideaway

Unspoilt surfer's retreat

One-Bedroom Villa

Dwellings at beachy resort Nihi Sumba Island, set over hundreds of acres of unspoilt parkland, resemble traditional Sumbanese houses, with thatched roofs and peaceful private bales. But each is stylishly modern on the inside, with four posters and free WiFi. The resort caters to travellers who want natural and man-made thrills, with a private beach and raft of watersports, and an equestrian centre and cinema. Staff have been known to host the odd treehouse barbecue, too.

Smith Extra

A bottle of wine on arrival. SilverSmith and GoldSmith members receive a free room upgrade subject to availability; GoldSmith members also receive a 60-minute massage for each guest

Day 4

After touchdown on Sumba Island, you’ll be driven to your new stay. Kick off your shoes and get acquainted with this sand-dusted paradise isle.

Day 5

Head out of the spa and into the wilds on an indulgent day-long adventure.

Spa safari

Just after sunrise, you’ll head off on a 90-minute hike past rice paddies and through villages where you can buy local handicraft. But today isn’t just about endurance – when you reach the coast, you’ll be tended to by a fleet of staff, who’ll serve breakfast on a platform overlooking the ocean. When you’ve been fully fed, spa therapists will show you to clifftop hideaways where you can choose from a range of treatments (massages, body wraps, scrubs or facials). Take your time – you have until sunset to fully unwind, after which you’ll be driven back to the resort.

Days 6-7

Over the course of the next two days, spend your time sunbathing on warm sands, romping through the leafy surrounds, or maybe investigate Sumbas further spa offerings.

Day 8

You’ll have one last leisurely breakfast at your island stay before leaving saying so-long to Sumba.
A private driver will pick you up for the transfer to the airport and the flight back to Denpasar, then onwards or home.

3 Hours

When to go

Bali is at its busiest from July to August, when the weather is as beautiful as the landscape; however, some visitors prefer to visit in the downtime either side of peak season, and surfers will find the best waves come May to October.

Getting there

Guests must buy flights to and from Bali. International visitors usually fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport; flights from London arrive via Dubai; flights from the US stopover in Asia; and direct flights arrive from Australia. Inland travel is by private driver, where required, and there are connecting flights to and from Sumba Island.

Packing tips

Bring easy-on, easy-off togs for slipping between spa and beach; sturdy outdoor gear for hikes; and stylish yoga gear.

  • How can I trust Mr & Mrs Smith's hotel choices?
