A few extra nights here, a room upgrade there, a private meal on the beach: just say the word and our Smith24 team of travel experts can assist.
On landing at Yogyakarta or Semarang airport, your guide will transport you by private air-conditioned vehicle to your first base in Central Java.

1 Hour

Days 1–5: Java

Your location in Central Java puts you in reach of the city of Yogyakarta, with its royal palace, colonial architecture, traditional shadow puppetry and classical dance. Beyond the city limits, peek into the past, courtesy of the ancient Buddhist temple complex of Borobudur and the Hindu site of Prambanan.

Arum Villa

Set in the mountains of Central Java, an hour outside Yogyakarta, an antique-filled villa at MesaStila will be your home-from-home for three nights. Kick back and enjoy the 22 hectares of gardens, coffee plants and authentic Dutch colonial buildings; there’s an award-winning spa with a Turkish hammam too.

Smith Extra

20 per cent discount on a spa treatment (GoldSmiths get the same discount on a second treatment) and a bag of coffee on departure

Day 1

On arrival, you’ll have the rest of the day at leisure to relax after your flight.

Day 2

You have the day at leisure. We recommend cups of the locally-grown coffee and a pampering treatment at MesaStila’s award-winning spa, which has one of Indonesia’s only Turkish hammams.

Day 3

You’ll start under the glow of the moon for your guided trek to reach the summit of a local volcano in time for sunrise.

Merapi volcano trek

You’ll be picked up at 10pm the night before for the two-hour drive to Mount Merapi, one of the region’s most active volcanoes. On arrival at Selo village, you’ll have some time to rest before beginning your guided trek. You’ll reach the summit around 4.30am – just in time for spectacular sunrise views (cloud-cover permitting). Afterwards, you’ll hike back down to basecamp and be transferred back to your hotel.

Day 4

After breakfast, you’ll have a guided coffee plantation tour, before arriving at your next hotel, with the rest of the day at lesiure.

A coffee plantation tour

Today, you’ll get an insider’s look into the workings of a Javanese coffee plantation. Your guide will lead you through the farm and give you a dose of coffee history, before a visit to the roastery, where you’ll learn about production and enjoy a fresh cup of joe. You can also learn about the traditional Javanese herbal drink Jamu.
A chauffeur-drive private car will transfer 90 minutes away to your second stay in Central Java.

Day 5

Today, you head out on an excursion to the temple site of Borobudur.

The temples of Borobudur

Early in the morning, your private guide will take you to the colossal ninth-century Buddhist temple complex of Borobudur. You’ll experience this Unesco World Heritage site as the sun rises over the six relief-panelled platforms and 500 life-size Buddha statues.
You’ll be collected from the hotel and chauffeured in style to Yogyakarta airport, where you’ll catch an onwards flight to Bali. Upon landing at Bali’s Denpasar airport, your guide will whisk you away by private air-conditioned car to East Bali, where you’ll check in at your luxury hotel.

2 Hours

Days 6-13: Bali

Bali has it all: culture, history, tropical vistas, soothing spas, gorgeous beaches and chic restaurants. Your only problem will be deciding what to do each day: lounge by the waves, perfect your yoga poses, check out the local spa treatments…

Day 7-8

You’ll have the next two days at leisure: we recommend asking our Smith24 Team to arrange a reef-friendly snorkelling trip, taking a trek up the hillside, or venturing further afield for a visit to former royal palace Tirta Gangga.
In the morning you'll leave your stylish hotel in East Bali and jump in a private two-hour transfer to your next luxury stay on Seminyak Beach.

Day 9

After settling into your beachside hotel, you’ll have a private sunset cruise around Jimbaran Bay.

A sunset cruise around Jimbaran Bay

Hop on a speedboat inspired by the local fishing boats for your private two-hour cruise. Your captain will navigate the calm waters along Jimbaran Beach, up along the impressive coastline of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. Soak up the scenery, which will include the stunning cliffs of Uluwatu – topped by a sea temple. Join the captain for a traditional Balinese blessing ceremony, or take a refreshing dip, before making your way across Jimbaran Bay at sunset.

Day 10

Today, you’ll try your hand at making traditional Balinese street food.

A Balinese cooking class

In the early morning you’ll be whisked off to the province of Tabanan to meet the chef behind some of Bali’s best restaurants and your food expert for the day. After a coffee and chat at Puri Taman Sari hotel, you’ll cycle through rice terraces and rolling mountains to a local village market for an authentic Balinese breakfast. You’ll then learn how to make five different Balinese recipes, including chicken betutu, and enjoy the fruits of your labour for lunch.

Days 11–12

You’ll have these days at leisure, so lounge around and relax as much as you please, or strike out on seaside adventures. Join in the hotel’s daily yoga sessions (free) and have our Smith24 Team arrange Balinese spa treatments or private yoga and meditation classes. Soak up the sun on Seminyak beach or watch the surfers at Uluwatu – or hit the waves yourself if you’re a keen surfer.

Day 13

After one final breakfast in Bali, you’ll be driven to Denpasar airport to catch your onwards flight.
You’ll be collected from the hotel and driven by private air-conditioned car to Bali airport; from there, you’ll catch your flight home or on to your next adventure.

2 Hours

Getting there

Flights to Yogyakarta Airport route through Bali, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and international flights to Semarang stopover in Singapore.

When to go

Daily temperatures don’t vary wildly – you’ll be treated to heat and humidity year-round; visit between May and October if you’d rather give monsoon season a miss, and keep in mind that no check-ins or check-outs are allowed when Bali observes Nyepi Day (Day of Silence), and Bali’s airport also closes for the day. July to September is Bali’s high season, when the temperature and climate are at their most appealing.

Packing tips

You’re headed to prime trekking country, so bring your best jungle-rambling attire; for Bali, you’ll want beachwear, books and little else. Remember to leave space in your bag for a bag of Javanese Java to savour once you return home.

  • How can I trust Mr & Mrs Smith's hotel choices?
