Ain't love grand

Love may be all you need, but – if you’re honest – you’d like a honeymoon that climbs mountains, frolics with lions, and basks on ecologically-blessed beaches. We’ve compiled a sweeping journey through South Africa and Mauritius which has, well, pretty much everything. If our recipe for romance isn’t quite to your taste, we can dabble with the ingredients until your honeymoon is just right… Just tell our Smith24 team what you want, and they’ll work their magic.
After touching down at Cape Town International airport, you’ll meet and greet with a host who’ll help you through immigration and customs before taking care of your luggage. After that, they’ll lead you to your luxury sedan for a private transfer.

Days 1–3: Cape Town

With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Table Mountain standing sentinel on other, Cape Town isn’t short on dramatic views. Down on the white-sand beaches, sizeable swells feed a thriving surf culture, but the cosmopolitan city offers equal for potential for fine wining and dining, which is often far more friendly on the wallet than you might think.

Cliffside Clifton Beaches

Junior Suite

Cape View Clifton sits on prime beachfront that’s sheltered by Table Mountain. From the hotel’s decked pool area, you look out to the ocean and the coast to the majestic Twelve Apostles; needless to say, the sunsets are a thing to behold. The service is warm-hearted and the rooms have a luxurious, home-from-home feel.

A picnic basket

Day 1

Welcome to Cape Town, a cool urban centre embraced by dramatic scenery and edged with beautiful beaches. On arrival day, you’ll have time to snooze off any jet-lag and gently explore your new surroundings. Perhaps hop in a taxi for the 10-minute drive to Bo-Kaap, where streets are lined with acid-bright houses, then stop on shop- and café-lined Kloof Road on your way back.

Day 2

Today it’s guest’s choice: with a private driver and guide at your side the city is yours to explore.

Kayaking and other adventures by the Cape

You’ll have a private guide and a vehicle for the day from Cape Town-based company Escape and Explore, who’ll hash out a tailor-made plan of activities. It’s all about what you feel like doing on the day: if you wake up to a good swell, you can ditch your planned hike and hit the beach for a surfing lesson instead. A wild picnic or fine-dining lunch are included too, as is all the necessary equipment.

Day 3

You’re already drunk on each other, but today, you’ll be a little tipsier after touring Cape Town’s vineyards.

A safari and tasting tour of the Winelands

Your journey into the Winelands kicks off with a two-hour safari in Stellenbosch Valley's Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary, greeting the dazzles of zebra, towers of giraffe, and the bontebok and springbok who roam there, before sipping sparkling Methode Cap Classique. Next you’ll head to a ridiculously romantic estate in the Jonkershoek Valley for lunch and more wine, before dessert at the Waterford Wine Estate, where the sommelier’s picks are paired with chocolate.
You’ll be met by a driver who will take you to Cape Town airport in a luxury car. A host will assist you onto your flight to Kruger Mpumalanga International. From there, you’ll be met and escorted to the plane for the short charter flight to Ulusaba Rock Lodge.

5 Hours

Days 4–7: Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Set just off from the vast plains of Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand is a private game reserve home to a role call of Africa's most majestic critters: lions; zebras; giraffes; elephants; cheetahs – all the crew.

Wilderness of winning game

Rock Cliff Room

Ulusaba’s luxurious accommodation comes in two styles: conical-roofed houses or treehouse-style suites, both of which are set high on a koppie (hill), looking out across vast tracts of game-rich savannah below. Candlelit dinners bring the best of Africa's seasonal produce to the table – you’ll likely find the traditional braai (barbecue) to be a culinary highlight of your stay.

Smith Extra

A personalised Ulusaba Encountered book – a picture-laden guide to the reserve

Day 4

After a leisurely breakfast, load your beach towels and newly-acquired bottles of wine into your bags and take one last look at the mountains before heading north to Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

Days 5–6

At Ulusaba you’ll have two daily game drives, giving you the best possible chance of tracking down the Big Five. On your first night, unwind at the Aroma Boma spa, perched 800 feet above the savannah – there are specialised treatments for Mr. Smith too (not included in your stay). On your second evening, you might want to request a stargazing class with one of the rangers, who’ll guide you through the constellations, visible here at their brightest. On your your final night, make it a dinner to remember by having a private table set up beneath the stars.
From your hotel’s private airstrip, you’ll board a twin-engine aircraft for a short hop to Johannesburg (around a 90-minute trip); book a window seat for breathtaking views. From Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport, the flight to paradise isle Mauritius is around four-and-a-half hours.

6.5 Hours

Days 7–14: Mauritius

At just 2,030sq km, Mauritius is a fairly small country, but it packs a big cultural punch as a result of multiple colonists (Dutch, French and English) and seafaring settlers from Africa, China, India and more. The landscape is just as impressive: a mountainous and lushly forested interior leads to white-sand beaches and the warm Indian Ocean, where you’ll find coral reefs teeming with sealife.

Thatch and glitz

Chic-en-Flacq headland

Junior Suite

Luxury resort Constance Prince Maurice uses the island’s coastline to its full advantage, placing its charming, bure-roofed suites along a green-fringed lagoon. Decked walkways lead you to floating bars and restaurants ideally positioned for watching the sun setting over the water. After dark, each buildings stands out like a stilted lantern.

Smith Extra

A fruit basket, bottle of wine (champagne for GoldSmiths) and for GoldSmiths staying five nights or more, a 30-minute back or foot massage each

Day 7

You’ll have one last chance to spy on wildlife over breakfast before travelling to your island stay. On arrival, you’ll have the rest of the day to spend as you choose.

Days 8–13

Spend the rest of your honeymoon flopped down on twin beach towels or paddling in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Get up and explore types can ask the hotel to arrange a boat trip to charming Ile aux Cerfs, wander up to Cap Malheureux, or browse sarongs and bowls of colourful spices at Port Louis’ bazaar.

Day 14

Linger over one more seaside breakfast, then go for a barefoot stroll on the sand before bidding adieu to your island stay.
You'll be taken, by luxury car, to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport for your flight home or on to your next destination.

1 Hour

When to go

Toto was right – sometimes the rains do fall in Africa, specifically from November to March. For clement temperatures and more chance of The Lion King in real life scenes at the watering-hole, visit in April or May.

Getting there

Book flights to Cape Town International, the trip’s starting point, and out from Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport. Our Smith24 tem are on hand round the clock to book your travel, if needed. All inland travel is included in a blissfully air-conditioned car with a personal, English-speaking driver; there are two short domestic flights, too.

Packing tips

You’ll need a deep suitcase for this trip: pack stylish city wear for the first few days in Cape Town, then swap your city swag for safari gear while in Sabi Sand Game Reserve. An abundance of beachwear is all you’ll need in Mauritius.
