Exploring South India

This nine-night trip through India's lush, leafy south includes days of sunning and sailing, with a few Ayurvedic spa sessions and guided tours thrown in for good measure. Relax at a bliss-inducing beach retreat in the Malabar, delve into the history of Fort Cochin and float through Kerala's backwaters on a houseboat. Whether you'd like an extra couple of nights in the backwaters, more massages, or romantic seaside dinner for two, our Smith24 team is on hand round the clock to tailor the trip to your tastes.
After your plane touches down in Cochin, a personal driver will whisk you you away in a luxury air-conditioned car to Marari Beach.

2 Hours

Days 1–3: Marari

Set on India's south-west shore, the Malabar region lucked out when it comes to coastal beauty, with an expanse of soft, alabaster sand running between coconut groves and the deep-blue waters of the Arabian Sea.

Garden Villa

And, relax… Your first stylish stop is a garden-set thatched villa at Marari Beach Resort. Days here idle along hanging out on hammocks, sipping cocktails in the beach-hut bar and relaxing on the coconut-palm-decorated estate's glorious stretch of sand.

A two-for-one dinner in the main restaurant on one night of your stay

Day 1

Plane-weary travellers can spend the remainder of the day at rest, or meander over to Mararikulam village to pick up essentials from pungent spice stalls or try a shot of potent coconut toddy – a heady alcoholic brew distilled from coconut flowers.

Day 2

You'll have the day at leisure and no-one will pelt you with coconuts if you spend it flopped on the sands or swinging in a hammock. However, the if you'd like to be pummelled into a knot-free state, ask our Smith24 team to arrange an Ayurvedic massage for you.

Day 3

Spend this free day exploring your surroundings. Marari offers myriad pastimes: watch fishermen cast their nets, play tennis, or ask our Smith24 team to arrange yoga sessions and cookery lessons if you fancy gaining a more supple frame or local cuisine know-how.
Your private, English-speaking driver will chauffeur you from Marari Beach through lush jungle terrain to Cochin.

2 Hours

Days 4–5: Cochin

Historic Cochin is positioned between the south’s famed backwaters and the Arabian Sea. It's a place of iconic fishing nets, gently-spiced coconut curries and a sultry tropical heat.

Historic stay Brunton Boatyard has upcycled a 19th-century shipbuilding yard, primping its elegant white buildings back to their former elegance and furnishing them with antiques. It's like stepping back to the Victorian times – and the bar is ripped straight from the pages of an Agatha Christie novel – but taking modern fine dining and free WiFi with you.

Day 4

Your early departure from Marari ensures plenty of time to settle in to your new digs in Cochin. If you've got energy to burn, go for a whirl around the Mattanchery Market, once the bustling centre of Cochin's spice trade.

Day 5

Today you'll fully experience all of Cochin on a day-long private tour.

Private tour of Cochin

A knowledgeable private guide will introduce you to the Keralan city. You'll stop by the charming, chandelier-hung Paradesi Synagogue, before heading to the Dutch Palace (actually built by the Portuguese) to admire its fine Keralan artwork. North of Mattancherry, Fort Cochin is filled with grand British townhouses, Dutch cottages and the oldest European church outside the Continent, the 16th-century St Francis Church.
A private driver will take you from Cochin to Ernakulam Junction where you’ll board a first-class carriage on the Ernad Express train; the journey takes around seven hours, so bring an engrossing read.

7 Hours

Days 6–10: Kerala's backwaters

This chilled-out bit of Kerala has a prime spot on the south-west coast, at the northern tip of the backwaters with brackish lagoons overlooking the Laccadive Sea. Tap into your inner yogi, watch the thatched houseboats drift by, and eat your fill of freshly-caught fish.

Day 8

Start this free day on the beach, trying to spot the early morning dolphins. Spend the rest of the day exploring the local area by bike, or touring the centuries-old Bekal Fort – our Smith24 team will happily arrange either for you.

Day 10

Back on dry land, squeeze in a few spoiling spa treatments – our Smith24 team can arrange those for you – before your private driver arrives to take you Mangalore International Airport.

  • How can I trust Mr & Mrs Smith's hotel choices?

A hotel or experience has to be genuinely special to make it into a Mr & Mrs Smith itinerary. The Smith team has to have ensured that any inclusions meet our high standards before they'd consider adding them to our exclusive packages.

  • What if I want to add on a few extra nights or arrange a special meal? Can I add on a waterskiing lesson? I've always fancied that… And can we stay in the honeymoon suite instead?
