Days 1–2: Colombo

Genteel manor houses and modern skyscrapers are equally apparent in Sri Lanka's capital city, a historic seaport with leafy green neighbourhoods and a bustling, past-greets-present interior.

The Wallawwa

Nestled in Negombo

Garden Suite

Your first stop on your Sri Lankan odyssey is The Wallawwa, a restful boutique stay, nestled in Colombo’s Negombo neighbourhood. This 200-year-old manor house is surrounded by lush tropical gardens and within, its gracefully-restored original features have been spiced up with luxuriant interiors and a lush-as-you-like spa.

Day 1

Ease into your trip with two free days in Colombo. To kick off, try kottu roti and spiced crab claws at sociable Galle Face Green's street-food stalls, pay devotion to Gangaramaya Temple's many Buddhas and pitch up to Pettah for madcap markets.

Day 2

Today, why not swap Colombo for Negombo – the beachy neighbourhood to the capital's north. The city's shoreline has golden sands and is set for a slew of watersports. It's possible, on request, to book a cruise around the mangrove-lined Muthurajawela Wetlands – a taster of the wildlife-roamed greenery that lies ahead.
The chauffeured drive inland may be long, but it passes through Sri Lanka's jungliest parts, which make for fine panoramic shots.

3 Hours

Days 3–5: the Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle is a land of immensities – whether they be the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world at Minneriya National Park, the massif beasts of the Knuckles Range, or the Triangle's claim to an impressive seven Unesco-listed sites, including the birthplace of Buddhism – Anuradhapura and Mihintale –, the rock-hewn fortress of Sigiriya and the royal city of Kandy.

Architectural eye-opener

Ehela Room

Beginning as an agricultural project, Kalundewa Retreat’s dazzling design is deep rooted in nature. The all-natural interiors overlook rice paddies, lagoons and mountain ranges in the distance. Spend your days splashing out in the ulpatha (spring pool), perfecting your yoga poses with resident yogi masters, or in cookery lessons with the head chef – whatever gets your heart beating.

Smith Extra

For Smiths staying on the room-only rate, one breakfast for two; for Smiths staying on all other rates, one special set-menu dinner in the grounds

Day 3

Enjoy a leisurely à la carte breakfast on the veranda before your private driver arrives and whisks you off to the Cultural Triangle.

Day 4

Today, your alarm clock will ring at a truly alarming hour, but we promise you'll be on a high by sunrise…

Hot-air-balloon flight over Kandalama

Start your morning bright and early, rising up and up over the luxuriant forests and twinkly lake of Kandalama, on a hot-air-balloon flight (only available November to April). From your tropical-bird's eye-view you'll spy the untamed jungles and mountainous outcrops of Sri Lanka's interior. Flights last for up to three hours and include a glass of champagne. If you want to ramp up the romance, we can arrange a special private dinner in the seclusion of Heritance Kandalama's cave.

Day 5

Spend this free day exploring the ancient Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock) fortress, or at Kaudulla National Park, which attracts 300-strong gatherings of elephants on the banks of its reservoir.
On the two-hour, chauffeured drive south to Kandy, you'll get a proper eyeful of the Knuckles Range, a landmark that certainly packs a punch.

2 Hours

Days 6–7: Kandy

Kandy’s famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic attracts a crowd of monks, pilgrims and tourists, and its botanical gardens may be Asia’s finest, but many of this historic city's dreamiest distractions lie outside its limits: spice merchants, verdant jungles and tempting tea plantations are just a car ride away.

Monkey Puzzle Deluxe Room

Beautifully refurbished 200-year-old manse The Kandy House, is set in the leafy suburbs of Kandy. Minimalist lines, atypical antiques and quirky strokes of colour add personal touches to each of the individually-designed, romantic rooms. If you can bear to leave the genial grub and your chaise longue on the veranda, enticing hammocks beckon for ginning and sinning at happy hour around the infinity pool.

Day 6

Take in the views over one final breakfast at the hotel, then your private driver will escort you to Kandy.

Day 7

You'll have the day to spend at your leisure, so soak up the sights or the sun; it's your pick.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven to Kandy Station for a scenic four-hour, first-class train journey up into the mountains of tea country; on arrival, a private driver will be waiting to whisk you off to your next stay.

4 Hours

Days 8–10: Hill Country

This romantic region attracts active types for its sublime trekking, cycling and whitewater rafting; many make a beeline to climb holy mountain Adam's Peak. But if you'd rather kick back with a brew, tea estates offer more chilled-out thrills, including golf links, polo fields and soothing spas.

Day 8

There are ups and downs to the four-hour journey from Kandy to Hill Country, but your first-class cabin will make the time fly by.

Day 9

You're deep in tea country here, where plantations rise up and up. A tour of a tea estate and factory is included in your stay, but otherwise you're left to your leisure. Our suggestion? Relax, the kettle's on…

Day 10

Grab a trail map and go trekking or mountain-biking between the hotel's four bungalows for jaw-dropping views of lakes, mountains and tea-strewn slopes. For an easier exploration, we can book you tickets for a 90-minute train ride past waterfalls and verdant vistas.
The journey to the Maldives is lengthy, but you'll have plenty of time to flop on the sand once you're there. Your private driver will take you to Colombo (a five-hour drive), where you'll board a plane to Malé, the Maldives' principal island, just a short seaplane ride from your stay.

6.5 Hours

Days 11–16: the Maldives

The archetypal honeymoon destination, the Maldives’ far-flung, palm tree-topped islands of the Maldives – all 1,192 of them – tick all the boxes for a getaway in paradise. The azure-blue waters and white-sandy beaches blessed by golden sunshine were made for romantic sun-soaking, beach-based dining, and secluded swims under the stars.

When to go

Sri Lanka has more than enough sun to make it a year-round destination; monsoons can cause heavy yet humid showers in some regions from May to July and October to December, but there’s always a drier patch of coast to be found. The Maldives has a wonderfully temperate year-round climate, even in the monsoon season, which runs from mid-May to November.

Getting there

Fly out to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, and book a return flight from Malé International Airport. Our Smith24 team are on hand round the clock to book your flights, if needed. You will also need to arrange the flight between Sri Lanka and the Maldives: the seaplane transfers from Malé to the hotel are included in booking. Inland travel is included and is by luxury, air-conditioned car with a private, English-speaking driver, and in first-class train cabins.

Packing tips

Pack a portable speaker for en route entertainment. An extra bag may come in handy for your tea haul – you can take up to 10 kilogrammes of Sri Lanka's finest with you to sip when you return home. Something lightweight you can wrap elegantly around your head will come in handy during temple trips.
