Best Hotel Pool

Nothing gets you hankering for a holiday faster than hotel-pool eye candy: the anticipation of weightlessness, of cool water caressing warm skin, of sun, sky and birdsong reflected across mirror-flat surfaces…

The Best Hotel Pool is the first thing you want to test when you check in – and every day after. Swimmers, sunbathers, scenery lovers and sundown drinkers:
this award’s for you.

Winner Monastero Santa Rosa

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Best Hotel Pool - Smith Hotel Awards 2014 Monastero Santa Rosa

Infinity pools are rarely more stunning than the high-rise heated one here. Set into the terraced clifftop with jaw-dropping views, it more resembles a length of shoreline melting into the azure, Amalfi horizon than a swim spot. Its beach-like edge offers the perfect perch to enjoy an unfettered panorama from Ravello to Positano.

Best Hotel Pool Award Criteria

A visual delight

We’re not just talking turquoise oblongs with a few sunbeds here: the world’s Best Hotel Pool is a charismatic, architecturally sympathetic, eye-catching patch of perfection. It’s photogenic, alluring, beautifully set and looks good enough to drink.

Laps of luxury

Is it big enough and deep enough? Does it blend beautifully with its surroundings? Offer seclusion, or provide somewhere to make a swaggering entrance? Are the edges sensually undulating stone or crisply modern marble? Can I order a cocktail without leaving my lounger? Where’s my complimentary sun hat?

Setting the scene

A truly great pool is one that hangs out in great company: among branches in the rainforest canopy, above a volcanic caldera, across a riverine valley. Perhaps it’s visited by swallows, toucans or even elephants. But a soul-stirring swim spot doesn’t have to come with a natural backdrop: some see the great and the good gather to sip, socialise and sunbathe. Cocktails, DJs and iconic city skylines all make a splash in this category.

Added extras

Maybe this pool’s slate-lined, naturally filtered or teak-decked. Changing cabanas, perfectly soft towels, jaunty striped parasols, swim-up bars, romantic day beds for two… Creature comforts count.
