Film star: a four-night stay at Palazzo Margherita
At home with the Coppolas
We’d quite like to be a Coppola: aside from the talent-laced DNA, the vineyard in California and critical acclaim, you’d call luxury hotel Palazzo Margherita home. This trip lets you spend five days living the film-dynasty lifestyle vicariously, while discovering Bernalda’s untapped beauty.
If you’d like to add on a few nights, go wine tasting instead of biking, or arrange a special meal for two, like a benevolent Godfather, our Smith24 Team can ensure that it’s arranged…
This four-night trip costs £1,889 a person (approximately US$2,361), based on two people sharing.

When to go
This package includes a beach visit and bike rides, so to make the most of bucolic Bernalda and the southern coast, arrive in the summer months, between June and early September.
Your journey begins and ends at Bari Airport; transfers are included in the package rate. EasyJet and Ryanair fly direct from London and other major European cities. Flights from the US or across the Pacific connect via Milan or Rome. Inland travel is by chauffeured car or the hotel’s shuttle and on departure you’ll be driven back to Bari.
- Trainers for treading the streets to Matera
- Itsy-bitsy bikinis (and scandoloso Speedos) for glossy Spiaggetta Beach Club
- A recipe book, for jotting down tidbits of wisdom from the cook, Mariella
Lovingly restored and now run by the family of the Godfather of mafia movies himself – director Francis Ford Coppola – Palazzo Margherita is more grand family pile than luxury hotel, with unobtrusive yet intuitive service, extravagant suites uniquely designed by the Coppola clan and rustic home-made cooking. It’s a rarefied Baroque bolthole where you’re welcomed like an honorary member of the film-making famiglia…
Smith Extra A bottle of local wine
Day 1: Your private driver will chauffeur you from the airport to the Coppola’s humble(ish) home, where you’ll be welcomed with a chilled drink. Settle into your room, then spend the free afternoon seeking out the hidden fountains and pergolas in the lush gardens, or cooling off in the pool.
At 6pm, the hotel’s chef, Mariella hosts a one-hour cooking class, where you’ll prepare three different types of pasta shapes (fingers crossed for bow-ties) and a sauce in traditional, ‘just like nonna used to make’ style. At dinner – around the family kitchen table – you’ll sample the fruits of your labour and swap notes with your fellow guests.
Afterwards, the elegant Salon is turned into a cinema for the evening; settle in a prime viewing spot for a late-night film picked from Francis’ very own Italian-classics collection.
Day 2: After a hearty breakfast, at 10.30am a free shuttle will drop you at Spiaggetta Beach for a day of sunbathing on soft white sands. When lunch rolls around, see what the catch of the day is at La Spiaggetta Beach Club. Before heading back to the Palazzo, get an optional culture hit at Hera’s Temple in Metapontum.
After a pit stop at the hotel, hop on a bike for a special private tour of Bernalda’s historic centre with a local guide; pedal past charming churches, making frequent gelato stops along the way. Dinner is served at the hotel.
Day 3: You’ll be driven to ancient city Matera at 10am after breakfast. First stop on your private guided tour, the mysterious 9th-century Crypt of Original Sin, a natural rock cavity filled with vivid frescoes by an artist only known as the Flower Painter. Come up for air and a light lunch before exploring Unesco World Heritage site, the Sassi di Matera (prehistoric caves covering the hillside) and Park of the Rupestrian Churches. On this tour there's a special stop at 13th-century Matera Cathedral, you’ll visit the studios of Materani craftsmen before heading back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 4: Cesare Fiorio, a former sporting director at Ferrari, swapped the fast lane for an organic farm in pretty comune Ceglie Messapica. We've sourced an exclusive tour with Palazzo Margherita: Cesare will personally show you around the farm before joining you at a wholly homegrown lunch. After you've asked all your burning motor-racing and agriculture questions, you'll head off to Grottaglie’s ceramics district to buy amphorae and flower bud-shaped pumo from local ateliers and peek into its Museum of Ceramics.
Day 5: Bid a fond farewell to the hotel before your private transfer back to Bari airport, where you’ll fly home or on to your next destination.
