Where you'll go
First, you’ll meet Gus Powell for coffee at a NoHo institution on Lafayette Street. Here, you’ll have time to talk about your previous photography experience, show Gus some examples of your work and get feedback on techniques to focus on during the day. Then, you’ll head out to wander the busy SoHo (and NoHo) streets, letting the most intriguing subjects and morning light guide you. There’s no set route on this tour, but some of Gus’ preferred places to shoot are busy intersections and subway exits, where you’ll find a surfeit of colourful characters and surprising scenes.
What you'll learn
In a short time, and thanks to Gus’ enthusiastic tutelage, you’ll see your work improve in leaps and bounds. You’ll learn, or hone, techniques including sketching, fishing and following, setting the stage and finding an anchor. You can even work to a shot list or a theme that interests you (like ‘dogs’ or ‘haircuts’, perhaps). And, yes, talking to strangers may be required – Gus will teach you how to strike up conversations with your subjects and what questions to ask to set them at ease.
