Valentina di Pietro

Arty at heart

As a fully qualified art historian, Valentina di Pietro knows her Bellini from her Botticelli, but her passion (and specialist subject) is Rome’s modern art. Drawing from her extensive experience working with galleries and dealers, Valentina has sought out the lo-fi spaces and well-hung walls hidden amid the city’s busiest backstreets. She’ll give you the lowdown on the city’s coolest creatives (with a little local history, to boot) and show you that when it comes to culture, this city springs eternal.

Made you look: see cerebral, comedic and cult Italian artworks of all mediums in Rome’s zeitgeist-sussing galleries.

Where you'll go
Valentina leads you through Campo de’ Fiori with diversions into Rome’s Jewish Quarter and hippest ‘hood Trastevere. Routes depend on your meeting time and gallery opening hours, but contenders include Galleria Lorcan O’Neill, set in the former stables of Palazzo Santa Croce; Unosunove, a whitewashed space with an original checkerboard floor which complements the striking visuals of works displayed there, and Galleria Anna Marra, a champion of new and established local and international talents. Plus there’ll be pit stops to see politically charged work at Galerie Emanuel Layr, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in a deconsecrated 8th-century church, warehouse space T293, and a few landmarks…
What you'll learn
In addition to Valentina’s highbrow critiques, you’ll get one-on-one time with gallery owners and curators who’ll help you see pieces through fresh eyes. And, you’ll discover the inner workings of a modern gallery. Engage in lively debate on hot local topics – such as the growing city’s graffiti problem – and overhear art gossip over an espresso at famous deli and salumeria Roscioli. Then, hear the history of former temple and fish market Porticus Octaviae, ancient open-air entertainment hub Teatro di Marcello and Pons Fabricius, the oldest bridge in Rome, before more edifying cultural commentary.
