South London’s art stars

Peckham, London

South London’s art stars

Arts insider India Dickinson trails the zeitgeist to London’s lesser-sung painterly parts in Peckham and Camberwell. You’ll see inside studios, get private views with artists and move in offbeat creative circles…

There’s been a creative Big Bang south of the Thames. Lauded art schools, hot-contender galleries and a vibrant artist-led community have shifted the cultural scene from Shoreditch, Hackney and such. With broad strokes and finer points, gallery tours and meet and greets, India Dickinson (curator and agent with a highly trained eye) will paint you a picture of the area’s renaissance: a tale of Turner Prize nominees, YBAs and box-fresh scene-shakers.

"What a fabulous tour India created for us yesterday. I loved hearing how this very creative corner of London was inspired through philanthropy and social responsibility- it’s really come full circle from the early Victorians - at last.

We saw such a diverse range of media and it expanded my limited knowledge of contemporary art.”

– Shan H., May 2019

"India took us for a fun and informative 2/3 hour walking tour of a selection of the contemporary art spaces in Peckham.  Her approach was very relaxed, but extremely thorough and she had obviously done a lot of research about the history of the area, as well as of the exhibitions we visited. Highly recommended!"

– Amanda L., May 2019

“Our tour with India was fantastic! Her knowledge of contemporary art was very impressive and all presented in a calm and accessible way. It was an ideal combination of galleries, showing us sculpture, performance, painting and photography. The whole morning was perfectly tailored to our interests - all in all a roaring success!!”

At the art of London

As a curator and agent with 20 creatives in her care, India Dickinson has an eye for emerging talent and privileged access to artists’ studios. As such, she’s the perfect leader for a tour of London’s lesser-trodden arts hub. She’s scouted fresh talent at degree shows and by visiting studios throughout the UK, and sought out galleries in the most curious corners (a private home, a disused public bathroom…). You’ll see them all on this tour that traces art from concept to show and lays bare artistic practice.

A graphic take on South London’s contemporary arts scene, from school to studio to big-ticket show.

Where you'll go
Learn of Vanguard Court’s past lives: this former industrial site is now a thriving set of studios with some Turner Prize nominees amid its community. After audiences with artists, you’ll stroll to South London Gallery – the beating heart of the neighbourhood’s scene – for refreshments in the Habit café and a nose around a new exhibition. Then you’ll hit the Fire Station, an SLG annexe with a shifting programme of hot new work, and the Assembly Point, a dynamic arts space following the contemporary curve. Plus, potential pit stops at home gallery Lily Brooke and former lavatory the Bower.
What you'll learn
India will run you through her career highlights, then you’ll meet some of her success stories: Dominic McHenry, maker of abstract wooden sculptures and one third of sculptor collective Bask; California-born Emma Fineman who paints personal narratives; performance artist Josh Leon whose complex works add insight into a unique medium. (If you like what you see, some works are for sale.) You’ll be immersed in South London Gallery and the Fire Station’s most current shows, and indie curator Alice Bonnot will give you the lowdown on Assembly Point’s passions.
Experience location
You will be meeting by a leafy patch along Peckham Road; we’ll send you the details in your confirmation.
