Follow artistic Amsterdam insider Nelson Carrilho on a tour of the city’s notable sculptures and outdoor art installations.
This bronze-flecked amble through the historic Jordaan neighbourhood is led by a resident artist whose own renowned work explores the impact of colonialism and other social issues through playful, moving sculptures. You’ll get exclusive and unusual insight into the inspiration behind Amsterdam’s sizeable stone sculptures, modern bronze busts and stealthy social pieces on this thinkpiece of an alfresco art tour.
Amsterdam-based and Curaçao-born Nelson Carrilho moved with his family to the Netherlands as a child and graduated from the Art Academy in Utrecht in 1980. His playful works are influenced by traditional African and Caribbean elements, and are steeped in social commentary and satire – they typically comment on social abuses or highlight the importance of celebrating multiculturalism in society. Inspired by his personal history, he’s a champion of exploring the legacy of Dutch colonialism and how that can be expressed through art.
