When to go

The Dolomites wear a snowy crown, beloved by skiers and snowboarders from December through March. Summer’s sun-kissed valleys and mountain trails bring a second bloom of outdoors-lovers. And towns such as Brunico, Bolzano and Brixen thrive year-round.

Getting there

  • Planes

Bolzano Airport is the gateway to the Dolomites, with seasonal flights from some Continental destinations. International routes favour Innsbruck, Verona and Venice with greater consistency, depending on where you’re headed.
  • Trains

International rail routes will take you as far as Bolzano (from the south) or Innsbruck (from the north). Within the region, the Dolomites is well connected by scenic peak-patrolled train services that call at Brunico, Brennero and Bressanone.
  • Automobiles

Your need for a car in the Dolomites will depend on the scale of your ambition: for shorter sojourns, you can happily team public transport with adventures on foot; for the freedom to explore valley to valley, you’ll want a set of wheels.
