Visit Glenorchy during New Zealand’s summer months (December to February) if you’re hoping to hike and kayak your way through the region; if you’d rather snow dusted mountains as your backdrop then visit between June and August.

Getting there

  Most flights go directly to Queenstown, where a taxi can drive you northwest along Lake Wakatipu’s shores for just under an hour.

• Automobiles

  If you’d rather head to Glenorchy at your leisure, pick up a rental car from the airport and drive along the lake’s looming mountainscape, stopping for freshwater dips along the way. Once you’re in Glenorchy, a car can be useful for reaching further afield hikes and parks.
