Luxury holidays in Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest natural lake, set among the dramatic limestone crags of the Julian Alps in the Triglav National Park: a forested expanse of wildlife-rich wilderness and a scenic playground for hikers and cyclists. At the lake’s eastern end, Ribčev Laz is the main town – home to hotels, shops and restaurants – but it’s not the only draw: skiing at Vogel, waterfalls and gorges at Mostnica and Savica, rafting on Sava Bohinjska, fragrant forests and lacustrine valleys are a picturesque tonic for those in search of peace among the peaks.

When to go

Like many an Alpine destination, Lake Bohinj has two main seasons – winter and summer – with autumn and spring much quieter and subject to some off-season closures. From mid-May, meadow blooms draw nature lovers to town for the two-week-long International Flower Festival. For lake-based adventures, June to September brings the best of the weather; winter season in the Julian Alps runs from December until the end of February.

Getting there

  • Planes

Ljubljana is the nearest international airport, an hour away by road; Trieste in Italy is next in line, a two-and-a-quarter-hour drive away.
  • Automobiles

Whether you need a car for your Slovenian sojourn will depend on your mode of choice for exploring your lakeside locale: walking and cycling may be enough to occupy you, but if you’re planning days out on all sides of the lake, you’ll need wheels.
