When to go

Winter in the Highlands can be a fire-crackling kind of cosy, but rain is always a risk with the colder months, so heading to Nairn between spring and autumn is your best bet for dry weather.

Getting there

• Planes

  Inverness is a 15-minute drive from Nairn, but most international flights will require a layover in London. It’s more likely you’ll be arriving into Edinburgh or Glasgow, which are both around three hours away by car.

• Trains

  Scotland’s rail system is well established, and has scenic routes between its major cities. You can take direct trains from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen to Inverness, where you’ll then need to hop on a 20-minute train to Nairn.

• Automobiles

  A car is a good idea in these pastoral parts of Scotland, and driving is an idyllic and fairly easy feat locally.
