When to go

Surrounded by sea, and comparatively low, the Black Isle is one of Scotland’s driest spots. From April through to November, the peninsula typically enjoys mild temperatures, all the better for hiking. While winters can be brutal, the drama of snow coated forests and misty highland lakes more than make up for it. Take a tip from the Scandies and layer up. After all, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Getting there

• Planes

  The closest airport is Inverness, receiving flights from across the UK and Europe. For those further afield, Edinburgh and Glasgow International airports are a two- to three-hour drive away. Flights arrive here from the USA, UAE, Europe, Central America and Canada.

• Automobiles

  A bevvy of scenic roads await in this unspoilt nook of the Highlands, weaving through mountains and sweeping stretches of coastline. Hire a car to enjoy them at your own pace. If you’re brave enough to brace the winter months, snow tyres are advisable. Come prepared, and pay close attention to the weather conditions, particularly black ice on higher ground.
