Luxury holidays in Tavira

Balancing between the Spanish-Portuguese border, you’ll find the small unspoilt town of Tavira, ablaze with azulejo tiles, terracotta tesouro roofs and blancoed buildings that abut the Gilão River. Wander through the warren of cobblestone streets and past the sleepy squares, where locals lull between their afternoon tasks, to reach the sandy ruins and gleaming gardens of Castelo de Tavira. If you’ve come for the cyan-cast beauty of an Algarve holiday – without the budding crowds – then head a little further south to Tavira’s sun-kissed beaches.

When to go

Visit between June and August for the warmest weather; but those hoping to explore the town without the heat may be happier visiting during spring or autumn, when temperatures rarely reach beyond 27°C.
