When to go

Give monsoon season (June to August) a miss – the downpours can make the park inaccessible. For the best animal-spotting chances, visit between mid-September and mid-December, or between February and May.

Getting there

  • Planes

Touching down at Nepalgunj Airport – a short flight from Kathmandu – is by far the best way to reach the park. From there, hop on a bus to the park entrance at Tahudwara or arrange a private transfer (the journey should take three to four hours). Alternatively, fly in to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu from Asian cities including Bangkok, Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi and Seoul, then sit back, relax and enjoy a long but superbly scenic bus ride to the park.
  • Automobiles

Daily buses run from Kathmandu to Ambassa, near the entrance to the park. At 15 hours a ride, they take commitment, but you’ll be rewarded with en-route entertainment in the form of mountain, forest and savanna views.
