Luxury and boutique hotels on Sveti Stefan

With its Disney-backdrop looks, Sveti Stefan was destined to be an A-list hideaway; but it had to fix its pesky pirate problem first. In the 15th-century the peninsula became a fortified settlement for marauder-free fishing. In the 1950s, when its population dwindled, Sveti was rebuilt as a VIP resort, attended by Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret and more luminaries. It fell into disrepair after the breakup of Yugoslavia, but was as elegantly reclaimed as its former cottages when Aman took over. Be sequestered to its ‘islet’ or move into Villa Miločer, the former summer home of Queen Marija Karadjordjevic. Lounge by the Adriatic, swim into secret coves, hit Kotor’s Unesco-stamped Old Town closeby – or just lord it over your own private realm.

Getting there

  • Planes

Set by the Bay of Kotor – offering spectacular views as planes swoop down – Tivat Airport is the closest international hub, around an hour’s drive away. There are direct flights from most major Continental cities on the Continent; and flights from further afield will stop over in Europe.
  • Automobiles

All you require for island exploring is your own two feet – and occasionally the hotel's boat.
