Mallorca, Spain

On the southwest coast of Mallorca, Port d’Andratx attracts a monied crowd, the likes of whom own the lavish villas set high in the tree-clad hills. However, a mixed clientele keeps things interesting: in the spirited bars and cafés lining the waterfront, local fisherman, media sorts and A-list fly-ins mingle over café con leches and cocktails, and watching the nets being hauled in is a soothing sight. The two beaches here are small yet serviceable – for lengthier stretches of shore head to nearby Andratx, to spread a towel on the popular Camp de Mar. Shops and restaurants reflect the diverse residents: the former run the gamut from designer labels to quirky curio shops; the latter star plenty of fresh seafood – with Mediterranean and Asian influences – both low-key and high-end. Go hiking and biking in the hills, catch a boat to mythical-beast-shaped isle Dragonera to spot birds and scuba dive, and head out to neighbouring villages and towns for worth-the-jaunt meals and historic treasures.
Port d’Andratx is peachy through spring, summer and autumn, with its Goldilocks sunshine levels. To see the port in party mode, visit in mid-July, when the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in colourful style.
