Monsoon is from June through to September, which is a magic time for retreats. Otherwise, March and April’s balmy climes are ideal for exploring.

Getting there

• Planes

  Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest, just a 50-minute drive from the city centre, with flights arriving from all major cities in India. Those arriving from overseas should take a 50-minute connecting flight from Delhi airport to Dehradun or buckle up for a lengthy (five hours or so depending on traffic) but scenic drive.

• Automobiles

  Inner-city traffic can be time consuming but congestion eases as you approach the country. Otherwise, you’re good – roads are generally in fine condition but be prepared for narrow, hairpin bends as you near the hills of Mussoorie.
