When to go
Much of the island shuts up shop for winter. Summer is the busiest season, when island-hopping holidaymakers hotfoot it to the Cyclades… but Folegandros is one of the archipelago’s less visited destinations, so you shouldn’t find yourself surrounded by crowds.
PlanesThe most convenient airport is on Santorini, 45 minutes from Folegandros via boat and 18 minutes away by helicopter. Fly to Santorini National Airport (www.santorini-airport.com) from international destinations including London, Manchester, Rome, Paris and Barcelona.
BoatsBoat journeys from the port of Piraeus in Athens take from four to six hours; the daily catamaran connection from Santorini takes less than an hour. There are also daily boat connections between Folegandros and neighbouring islands.
AutomobilesRenting a car (or a scooter) is the ideal way to explore the island.
It would be easy to miss Anemi if you didn’t know it existed; a scattering of whitewashed cuboid buildings with rounded corners and rectangle windows are built into the dipped recesses of the unspoilt Greek terrain. Like fireflies at night, spotlights illuminate the understated exterior after darkness descends. If it’s seclusion you’re after, the Junior Pool Suite has it in abundance. White walls, slate floors, views over the Aegean Sea and minimalist furniture all help make this suite archetypally Greek. On the flagstone terrace outside, a mosaic of cobbled stones and clusters of flowers ensconce a small private pool.
