Who knew the next cultural revolution would awaken on a little isle in the Adriatic? A retreat that revolves around a summertime festival, at Obonjan you wake to the sound of waves lapping golden beaches, practice your sun salutations as the it rises over the water, then meet up with friends for a healthy breakfast at one of the pop-up restaurants scattered around the island. This is all before days filled with watersports, talks, art workshops, film screenings and theatre productions in an amphitheatre overlooking the sea. Spend your evenings gazing up at the stars or dancing under them to live DJ sets in the forest.
When to go
Obonjan is open to the public on select dates between June and September; this year, the summer program runs for 70 days, from 23 June to 3 September.
PlanesZadar (www.zadar-airport.hr) and Split (www.split-airport.hr) airports are about an hour’s drive from Šibenik harbour where boats leave for the Obonjan. Easyjet (www.easyjet.com), Croatia Airlines (www.croatiaairlines.com) and Eurowings (www.eurowings.com) fly direct from most European cities. Travellers from across the Atlantic or Pacific will need to stop over at least once. Private transfers (transfers.getbybus.com) to Šibenik harbour cost between €58-78 (each way), depending on the size of the vehicle.
BoatsObonjan run their own boat service from Šibenik harbour - look for their big blue flags. Boats leave port three or four times a day; the trip takes roughly 45 minutes and costs €14. Book a private taxi-boat from the harbour for a quicker, though more expensive, crossing (taxi-boat-sibenik.com). For any queries contact Obonjan’s transport team on [email protected]
